It's probably the alarm siren which sits behind the N/S front wheel arch. Try unplugging the loom to it and see if the remote works.

Maybe consider Wayne Gates, Harrow?...it's a bit further than Cambridge....but reputable and they can update the digital service book, just like Mercedes. https://www.mercservicing.co.uk/

Hi, I had similar issues and in the end it turned out to be the rear SAM. It may be worth taking it out, opening it up and cleaning it and then putting back together, although mine needed changing in the end. Have you considered the rear brake light bulb modification...
