Suspected Crankshaft Position Sensor fault turned ugly

Thank you for all the suggestions and ideas. Had this of happened some time ago i would have been more than willing to give it a go myself - but I simply do not have the time nor space to do it at the moment, hence I needed a willing garage to take the job on. The garage who has the car at the...

Suspected Crankshaft Position Sensor fault turned ugly

Cheers Grober. I'm not very well-equipped at home and working on a driveway in this weather isn't ideal.... but I'll put this to the bloke at the garage as I do agree that it seems like a wise move, and essentially I have little to lose (other than the fact if it does go t!ts-up the car then...

Suspected Crankshaft Position Sensor fault turned ugly

OK so the garage got back to me: a) codes were all erased b) test drove the car.. after 10 mins or so the EML came back on. Symptoms now the same as before c) ran diagnostics again... image attached showing errors. Not sure what the door one is (possibly just the kerb light or something?), but...

Suspected Crankshaft Position Sensor fault turned ugly

Thanks David. Indeed that's what it boils down to... not the fact they couldn't get it out, nor even the fact I've paid for their time.. but more so the fact I've got the car back in a worse state than it was when it went there, despite allowing them to do what they said needed to be done 'to...

Suspected Crankshaft Position Sensor fault turned ugly

Thanks for your input Steve, appreciated If I've got my bearings right with this pic, this is the CPS (red arrows pointing to it). Also attached photo of the new sensor. Parts falling down inside the bell-housing is why I was reluctant to get it up on the ramps and do it myself (driveshafts...

Suspected Crankshaft Position Sensor fault turned ugly

Thanks Natacha, and no - not at all insensitive. I didn't post here wanting/expecting everyone to share my viewpoint and in truth it's been a breath of fresh air having the opinion of someone who works at another garage, so thank you. I certainly don't blame the Indy for the sensor not...

Suspected Crankshaft Position Sensor fault turned ugly

Thank you blackC55, I appreciate your input. Not much more I can say in response to this other than what's already been said. I fully respect the time spent working on the car needs to be paid for. Businesses need paying for their time, I really do not dispute this. I also fully understand...

Suspected Crankshaft Position Sensor fault turned ugly

I've done a lot of work on cars myself over the years - from self-servicing through to stripping down engines and even a full rebuild. I don't claim to be a mechanic however (more a hobbyist) and fail to see what relevance this has, unless I've overlooked something?

Suspected Crankshaft Position Sensor fault turned ugly

Yes, totally understand this and being self-employed myself I hate it when people expect me to work for free - hence I'm really trying to see both sides. Had the car came back to me without further damage (physical, which wasn't the case when I dropped it off), I wouldn't be questing the charge...

Suspected Crankshaft Position Sensor fault turned ugly

Thank you for your thoughts MercedesDriver. I'll wait and see what the garage says once he's cleared the codes and then test-driven it. I also plan to take photos of what the Indy has done to the sensor and then challenge them over charging me for making it worse. I was holding off with this...

Suspected Crankshaft Position Sensor fault turned ugly

So, after speaking with another privately-owned garage he seemed to be quite certain the fault wouldn't be the sensor itself, but that 9 times from 10 it's to go with the connection (damage to the wiring loom), so his advice was to unwrap the loom and inspect for any damage. He said that if the...
