Doesn't this just reinforce the reasoning best tyres to the rear? Your new fronts grip well in the wet but the worn rears will let go and try and swap ends.

Regarding external charging ..

Be aware that one should remove the rear battery neg connection before removing the front starter battery. This from MB training manual..
