Never tried any of the cheaper reset tools but I am sure they should do the job. They may not give a fault code error though but it sounds like you dont need that. I have a EU702 diagnostic which can reset airbag lights. Your welcome to give it a try if your near northants?

Have you had the catalyst checked out? I know the Mercs are prone to the catalyst braking up and causing the car to slip into the safety mode which wont allow the engine to rev above 3000rpm.. Good luck!

The problem I had was poor starting if the car was left for prolonged periods of more that a couple of days. A little bit of investigation and I found the air in the fuel lines which was the problem.
