Much more elegant than my effort that was done with the load cover still in situ! However it is still working and I will probably give it another treatment if the rain ever stops.

Just a domestic kitchen surface cleaner. It was surprisingly sticky on the reverse side of the cover despite being very clean on the upper side, and I can see why it was struggling to fully retract.
