The problem with the existing setup is it is fuzzy. So arguably the risk regarding identity threat is greater simply because identity is vaguely defined and proved. If you bring in identity cards then you also bring in a better means of defining and verifying identity. And a you can bring in...

My view of the latest legislation is that it is the UK parliament going down the same road as the Scottish and Welsh legislative assemblies and local councils and Mayors. Basically when you have nothing better to do and want to be seen to do something then legislate something reasonably useless...

You have to assume any document somebody carries and that they present for viewing can be forged. So the solution is ultimately to allow somebody who want to verify the card a means of checking it with a central system. The usual checks in the UK are to verify the information you give...

UK NHS is not actually UK wide. Separate registries. I have never had to provide a NI number to a doctor in Scotland. So the English setup may try and tie their NHS numbers to NI Numbers and the child equivalent - but to my knowledge the Scottish setup cannot and does not. It is possible to...

Passports are already faked and forged. They are also transient. But worse - while border authorities might have a means of identifying these as valid - I suspect that most institutions in the UK that accept them have no clue whatsoever as to what they are actually looking at. I suspect that...

That's a self-centric view because you can deal with it now. But there's a wider issue - not everybody drives and not everybody has a pasport. BUT My fundamental point is that identity is an issue behind the scenes. Your passport is a temporary document. Different government departments and...

The UK has a unique way of messing people up. So no proper Identity setup. You get an older person trying to deal with a financial institution or trying to take a domestic flight. No current passport. No current driving licence. In the past they might have had a local bank branch that knew them...

So the passport - your first document - is a bulky thing that is used as a travel document. It's only used as an identity document within the UK because .... we don't have ID cards. It is a relatively fragile thing (paper - which if it gets even slightly damaged can invalidate it as an...

It would be better if we just had ID cards. But given the UK way of doing things they would end up charging a huge amount to implement such a system. And Scotland and Wales would both insist on doing something different.

Productivity vs computing performance are two different things. So you can have a processor that runs at GHz and GBytes of memory and Tbytes of storage - but it won't necessarily do any more real work than a system that used to run at MHz, have MBytes of memory and Mbytes of storage. Yes there...

So cost of people being overweight was put at £98 billion. (19 billion to NHS ) Reduction in smoking supposedly increases obesity levels. Nature and the universe just don't give you a break.

I think this mindset is universal. It just manifests itself with different perspectives. So one person might complain benefits are over-generous, another that they are too low, another that defence spending is unnecessary, another that we should be implementing 'basic income' schemes .... and...

If a car manufacture traditionally takes a component and marks it up (electronic black box, plastic trim, headlight, pump) so that it is expensive in the ICE world - then it's unlikely that the pricing culture and strategy will change much when it comes to the EV world.

There may be more than one motor. Presumably the Tesla models with dual motors have no central differential. And if there are quad motor AWD EVs with independent drive to each wheel then they won't need front and rear axle differentials?

    The EV fact thread

I think we see the situation with ICE vehicles that simple wear and tear components - ball joints and bushes and bearings wear. Then there are things like A/C and ICE bits which can be expensive. And electronics components can be appallingly priced. If owners could refurbish their vehicles in a...

I used the term 'trap'. So what I meant was that manufactures were selling cars *above* that level. That tax incentives and some early adopter enthusiasm allowed them to do this. That then hinders the market due to the lack of attractive vehicles under that threshold.
