It's the quality of futility and worthlessness that counts here.

I set low targets and consistently fail to achieve them. (I have even been known to give myself permission to cheat and still fail, and that's after sitting the tests I have written myself)

I would suggest its downhill all the way, but that actually means you have raised the level you were at, or perhaps at least coasted along on the level before descent. I my case, I am at the bottom of a bottomless pit.

That light I can see is just a man with a torch, bringing me more work.

Mind you, on the plus side. I do feel it is Rome, as it appears all roads lead here..
