r129 500sl
I regrettably recently sold my 97 r129 500, as i just bought new mustang
and already have other vehicles to use.But i am in s position now where i am thinking of buying another usable classic am looking at either 928 porsche or r129 500 or 600. must be facelift model 5 speed
The problem is my last 129 with panoramic roof and 67000 miles i sold for 8.5k about 3 months ago is going to be hard to replace for even 10k as it
needed nothing and everything worked. paintwork was perfect new tyres etc.
I am looking for a car with sub 100k miles prefer dark colour with light interior
obviously 600 cars are more expensive and i would adjust my budget accordingly but not to the extent of 40k
any one out there please get in touch

I have both a 98 SL500 with about 65k miles (M119 engine) and an 88 928S4 with about 79k miles and the two cars are quite similar.

Performance wise, the 928 and the SL500 are about the same. The 928 seems to have better brakes although the later M113 powered R129's also got huge brakes.

Parts are cheaper on the SL500 and it's a little more refined. If I had to choose one , I would not know which one to choose, but regardless of choice, I would not find myself regretting the decision.

One thing that would put me off the 928 would be the very long timing belt. I've seen quite a few 928's in the workshop with the heads off!

While a timing belt failure is serious on any 928, it can be a disaster on a later model. At some point, the 928 engine changed from a "free-wheeling" to a "interference" or "valve-crash" design, but there is not universal agreement on exactly when this change occurred. This means that on all except the earliest two-valve cars, timing belt failure or slippage can cause the pistons to hit the valves, resulting in major damage to the engine.

The smart money would be to do the timing belt right away so that you don't have to worry about it. The S4's have a belt tension warning system that would trip a warning light if slack is detected.

928's are appreciating (as it seems are many front engined Porsches of that era, including my 968). May be a consideration!

Some of the early interiorsweree-- how can I put this- an acquired taste!

Later versions were a bit more restrained thankfully!

Pasha velour! Hard-on territory for me. Absolutely wonderful material.

I would say SL500 but a little biased as love them. Never had a 928 so can't comment on that.

One question I have to ask...why did you sell your SL500? Also why for such low money? Good facelift ones are well over 10k.

I have a nice 99/T SL500 and unless I find an SL60 again to swap it for I'll keep it. Don't see the point in selling for what it would be worth even 15k as what do you replace it with.

The reason for me selling was that i bought new Mustang, with the intention of using as a daily, but i find it not practical very lively on rear end in the wet.
i already have various cars and motorcycles [ about 35 in total ] and classic Mustangs
BUT i miss my old SL basically,I had my old car for 6 years and sold for double i paid,so it seemed like a good idea at the time. it had given me no problems other than service and a broken sunvisor hinge, jamming ariel mast and cats broken up.
So the hunt continues

Fair enough...cant argue with that. Chr1st on a bike 35 cars.....I thought I was bad with 7. I guess many or collection pieces?

If you can't find me an SL60 I'll let you take my SL500

How do you find the Mustang other than those issues? Still a good car?

I agree that a nice R129 SL500 is a great all round car & great value for money. Zero depreciation...potential appreciation & pretty low running costs.

Hi Rockits the Mustang i have is the v8 and very well appointed for the money
420hp rocketship,i have had 30mpg on long run with sensible driving between 75 and 85mph lovely engine,i have the auto which is 6speed with paddles,
all bells and whistles at least 25 grand cheaper than any german car with similar performance and less gadgets.
currently still on original American tyres which i will change to make for better grip hopefully.
regards Richard

Sounds like it a decent and viable alternative to the usual suspect now that they are official UK RHD models. Is the auto/paddle box any good? Is the manual any good?

The auto box with paddles is delightful with various modes
The manual again is very precise and a vast improvement on my last Bulltt mustang of 2008
I just like Autos i think it is an age thing!!:bannana:

928 gets my vote. An S4 preferably even if I prefer the look of the 'S'.

I had that interior in my S1, well it was the blue variant of it. Loved that car, you could hear knicker elastic twanging at 50 feet. Cost me a fortune though (car and the panties).

Funny, I see one in a ditch at least once every week. More if I happen to a cars & coffee meeting. The newer ones have IRS and do better. Amazing how fuel efficient an American V8 can be. Even the Corvette with a 6.2 l V8 can do 30 (US) MPG.

I have a 928 S4 auto and and SL60 (previously have had an SL500 and 600, both R129s). It will cost a lot more to get a 928 in the same condition /mileage as a decent SL500 and maintenance costs are higher (they're trickier to maintain properly and there are only a few decent specialists, the OPCs being a bit of a lottery). Well-sorted a 928 is a delight, though otherwise horrible and a money pit

Depends what you want really, as they have different characters.
