I have just bought a 1993 190E 2.0L Auto.
It has quite a pronouced clonk which appears to be coming from the rear of the car when moving from Neutral to either Drive or Reverse. Once in gear it drives normally and will kickdown.

Both the front and rear prop shaft couplings are good. It's just about to have the auto oil and filter changed.

Anyone got any ideas what it could be - car has only done 94k

Thanks for any advice.

Might be the central U/J and or bearing or the flexibly mounted bearing mount. Possibly obscured by a heat shield above the exhaust? Other possibility might be a problem with the rear subframe mounts [ the front ones] or maybe the differential mounts?

Thanks guys. Turned out to be the front prop shaft coupling after all.
