Are these as rare as they are making out? Looks an interesting car all the same.

Rare...yes. They didn't do them in rhd w210s because of difficulties with steering columns etc. So a 4 matic W124 is a rare beast.

Very rare to find one still running. Early ones had lots of problems with transfer gear/central differential case leaks leading to very expensive repairs. http://www.mbclub.co.uk/forums/general-discussion/21885-4matic-models-uk-poll.html

A 4Matic saloon is very rare.

IIRC the 4WD can be disabled to hide expensive problems.
