Pity the Lake District weather on 31 Dec wasn't anywhere near as beautiful as it had been on 30 Dec (or, indeed, as it turned out on 1 Jan, when we stayed in bed all day), but we nevertheless were determined to get the top off the car, wrap up warm and head for the hills at 830am. Firstly, the Kirkstone pass.

The weather was pretty dreich on the way up, foglights required:

But, from the opposite direction at the same stop:

From the Kirkstone Pass, we headed across "The Struggle":

And on to the Wrynose Pass, and this:

Some stunning views there kraftwerk :)

Looks like your NS brake lamp is failing?

I think MB only fit one rear fog, on the offside. We had another thread about this..

Thought so - I'd have had a dash warning light on otherwise.

And this is how it looked when I got home today...

1,196 miles, 23.05mpg. Not bad considering the 85mph cruise for three-quarters of the journey.

you have a good eye for photos there old chap

the way the fog follows the contours of the mountain-road-mountain is quite special

ill give you a £10 argos voucher for the filty old heap

parked against yellow lines, obstructing both access to the substation and a disabled bay

tsk tsk tsk :D

Lovely pics tho ;)

Do you know, in a convertable, that road is the most scenic in the UK. and in a tin top, you miss most of it.

Some roads near me do come close, but none actually beat that one road for sheer looks alone.(Thats the Kirkstone pass by the way. and you need to head north on it for the most impressive view. coming back down it does not do it justice)

Its not the best driving road tho.

Do the same trip again in June and take more piccies. adds some flavour to the show then.

well done tho, they are good.

Very nice pics.

Our Vito looks even worse than that after our run to Scunthorpe & back on New Year's Day. No chance of washing it as it's been below freezing all weekend :(

Very brave.

Cars should be either spotless or absolutely filthy. Rally style R129....looking good..

Nice pics, nice trip.

What wheels and tyres are they.?
They look like S class rims and the tyres look higher profile than normal SL ones.

It was lovely, yes, but most scenic in the UK? I'd say an awful lot of the west coast of Scotland beats it hands down.

I did drive it the opposite direction later in the day, but the weather had closed in, unfortunately. In June you'd need to be up there at dawn to really get the best of it. Any later and I'd guess it's heaving with people and traffic.

.

Well I do live there, so I guess I am qualified to say it.

And on a nice day, roof down, up that hill, I don't think you will find a road here that beats it.

That said, you will spend a number of happy years, and 1000's of miles coming close. It helps if those roads are on your door step.

The Lake District is nice, but that one road in really in a different league to the rest. Here, well, there are hundreds all very similar, each just as stunning in their own way, and a number are better to drive on too, but just for sheer scenery whilst driving up the hill........not sure if it can be beaten.

but you do need to have the roof off so you can get the full effect.

16" 12-hole alloys were standard on the R129 up to (and including) the SL500. Most people opted for the 8-hole 16" ones that came as standard on the SL600, because they were only £190 extra.

Nice to see a car being used properly. Great pics, the frost and fog make them.
