Just registered after weeks of scouring the net trying to work out the best R107 to buy. My budget is around £8k and my priority is to find the most straightforward and reliable model, not so bothered about performance. All reviews seem to point to the last 3 years of the model, so '86 to '89 and rate the 500SL as the best, but these years seem to have more sophistication, which worries me in terms of potential problems! I intend to garage the car and only use it in summer months. Any experts out there happy to point me in the right direction?

Many say the post 86 cars are the best but it's entirely down to individual choice, same with the engines. I personally prefer the V8's but a lot prefer the straight sixes. I have one for sale which I have just advertised for £8k if you are interested, I'm just not using it.
