Drivers face postcode lottery under pay-as-you-drive scheme

The Government is considering using the electoral roll to set charges for drivers, which could be as much as £1.30 a mile.

Motorists could either be monitored using "spy in the sky" technology, which would involve boxes being fitted to cars and tracked by satellites, or using a system where a charge card is fitted to the windscreen.
The card would be scanned by roadside gantries on toll roads. In both cases the motorist would be sent a monthly bill.

Trials of the "pay as you drive" system are due to get under way in 2010 and the details, including using the electoral roll, are set out in a consultation document sent out to those firms tendering for the contracts.

This is disgusting and bands people as soon as they enter a car the same level of privacy as a paedophile released into society, or a dog with a microchip. Are car drivers dogs or child molesters.

The only consolation is that this will cost an election, and they won't get away with it, nor will they be able to implement it.

PS Local MP emailed.

It'll never work or even get off the ground.

The spy in the sky scheme will not work as there will very quickly be devices to jam it. As for gantry type readers...never. It'll cost too much to setup and run and wont catch any of the foreign vehicles.

I think this sort of thing was muted sometime ago and dropped pretty quickly after they realised it just wont work.

Think they tried this with 'chips' in number plates on motorbikes - as a biker with two bikes this would never work. Firstly, it's positive discrimination (aimed at bikers and it's illegal under European Law). Secondly, the number plates would be 'accidentally' damaged rendering the chip useless.

Oh dear

Luckily, has been dropped and forgotten - for good hopefully.

This country is getting more and more ridiculous by the day.

The worrying thing was it was even contemplated and worse so implemented. Thats the thing with "changes" - once they are implimented we can rarely go back to the way things were.

Hmm so why do we pay VED ?? And fuel duty??

Surely it would be easier to charge an extra fee if you want to use the UK's motorways -- like in Switzerland -- and then all foreign cars would have to pay too..... yea like we're going to fine anyone from abroad and actively persue them for the monies ....

To be honest I'm getting sick of the "tax the motorist regime"...all it will do is get passed on into the inflation figures as companies will need to recoup their costs...
