I periodically run a Malwarebytes scan on our machines but don't recall it ever picking up anything that MSE had missed.

It depends where you've been on t'internet. I've two teenage kids and it blocks/finds malware that Norton, the AV I use, has missed. I think it's good practice to have Antivirus and anti-malware software installed. Have paid for malware bytes so it now runs in the background and I don't need to remember to do a scan.

We've got kids aged 6 / 11 / 14 who all use the internet, but the PC they have upstairs has parental control software on it and they are only allowed to use the 'main' computer downstairs under supervision (also on both only my password-protected account has admin rights).

The older two boys have iPads now though so most of the dodgy stuff is probably done on them ;)

I agree with two of your points. Essentials is free and its not a resource hog but it is pretty useless at catching any nasties.

I use it myself on my sons PC which he infects almost weekly without essentials even blinking. I have a scheduled malwarebytes scan which actually finds and clears stuff that essentials ignores.

What the hell is he doing with it? I SE fantastic, in fact, I had been using NOD for years but when I got a filthy virus that I thought I was going to have to rebuild to resolve, when I found a MS utility that fixed it. I then discovered SE and have been using it since without incident

When I changed over my wifes and my then work computers I also found a few virii had slipped through both NOD and AVG Free.

As said above, eventually you will be let down by any AV software, but I wanted speed as I game on my PC, so Kaspersky and Panda were nono's.

Daughter's laptop came home with her over Xmas and had 99 items removed by malwarebytes!! it had been turned off somehow and she had no idea what was going on other than the laptop was running really slow:rolleyes:

Never used any parental control software and history check show my kids have never had problems with dodgy pop ups.
I used public library computers in the children's section..... and got porn pop ups! On two separate occasions!
