Evening all, I'm just looking for any opinions on the engine in the current E200, we are going to look at a cabriolet tomorrow and it's a 200 petrol, I just wonder if it may be a little underpowered although I'm hoping to be corrected and it's hopefully a very nice drive, any thoughts are very welcome.

Thanks :thumb:

Mercedes E-Class cabriolet video | Carbuyer

My guess would be the E200 petrol will be a nice cruiser but because its heavy old thing you may need to go to something with a bit more torque if you want performance. You miss out on 100Nm from the base E220d for example. That's a third as much again as the petrol
Technical Specification

I would still have the petrol mind.;)

test drive its the only answer!!!!

Thanks for the thoughts, it was a 220cdi we enquired about but they've offered us a brand new 200 for 2k less than the demo diesel we were thinking about, as you say I think the answer i's to test drive them both back to back, thanks again

Historically the E Cabrio was in fact a C-Class, not an E-Class - so if this is still the case then the car should not be too heavy.

It would obviously be heavier than a 4-door C-Class (Cabrios are always heavier) but probably not as heavy as a 4-door E-Class.

Might be a good idea to check the weight figures ?

If this uses the M274 2.0 turbocharged then I reckon you'll have plenty of power. It drags my C200 around estate around and I'm happy enough with the power for my type of driving.

E-class cabrio I believe is based on the W204 saloon chassis.

I would go for a test drive, I've got a W205 C200 coupe and its fast enough for me. On paper the C200 petrol is slightly faster than the C220d anyway.

So much nicer than the 220d and 250d to drive and live with.

Compared to what?

if your choice is E220d or E200 the 200 is the better choice.

184bhp vs 177bhp.

8.4 to 60 compared to 8.7 on the 220d.

It will also map to 265hp if you feel inclined to match the E300 available elsewhere.

I'm sorry but an E200 is likely to be woefully underpowered.

Yes it is compared to a C63 but the comparison is between the E200 and the E220d and in that case performance wise the 200 has it.
It depends on what they're driving now ,if it's something like a Fiat 500 a E200 will seem fast,if it's a Bugatti Veyron then it'll look underpowered, but then so will a C63::):)

Does the Cabrio E200 petrol has the W204 engine or the W205 engine....?

I've had a w210 E200, a w124 E220 and currently have an A209 clk200. None have felt particularly underpowered except maybe the w210 five up (down to the south of France) The clk in particular holds its own against most stuff.

Seems that the figures speak for themselves, enough power I would imagine, unless you're a racer.

The e cab is a cruiser anyway, although we've got an e250cdi cab, next time I'm going for petrol, if they're available when we change in hopefully many years time

As an aside, my old w124 200te was a great car, not quick but charming, power isn't everything

Thanks very much for the input folks. We have a w212 E250 Cdi avantgarde saloon at the moment which we intend to keep. I had just wondered why they offered me the petrol for the kind of money that they have, it automatically made me think it must not be too good if they're doing that. We were meant to go today but I had to go into work so it'll probably be Sunday now before I get to drive it and see what I think, thanks again for all input :)

Thank you for assuming but I wasn't comparing it to a C63.

A 200 is no good in a car the size of an E class. I would go E250 at least.

Plus it's the torque of the diesel that will make it feel easier to drive.

...A 200 is no good in a car the size of an E class....

The E-Class Cabrio is in fact based on a C-Class, and the current model is based on W204. So the engine output should be really compared to a car the size of a C-Class, not E-Class....

Ok the 200 is no good in the c class either. I'm sorry my opinion doesn't match yours but if we were all the same life would be boring.
