Just got a letter from Gwent police syaing that they have recorded my car travelling at 105mph on the A449 AT LLANDENNY, I suppose that means a straight ban for the driver ?

Oh dear. Guess you must be suffering from amnesia. Ask for a photo so you are able to identify the driver at the time ;)

or you could have feared for your life from someone chasing the driver...

id go with the photo.. altho , i have heard some Camera ( stelth tax) safety ( why hide the vans then? ) partnerships don't release the picture till someone pleads not guilty.. :(

What was the speed limit there? 70 would be bad enough but if lower then it might be even more serious ("dangerous driving"?) ...

The NIP says Excess Speed 70 MPH Camera Device.

It is dual carriageway between the M50 and M4, so I am taking that as confirmation that it is a 70mph speed limit area.

What good will asking for the photo / video do ?

Read pepipoo for more info but could help if the picture is unclear/in error (does happen) or you can't remember who was driving at the time and the evidence fails to identify the driver.

Do check on recent cases though - they were looking to close loopholes.

Chances are you will get prosecuted but you might be able to" plead down" your speed if there is any doubt about the veracity of the recording equipment. You might also want to judge your chances of that by reviewing the speed you were actually doing. Just dont answer that on the forum!!! ;) there might have been mobile cameras operating in this area also see http://www.checkyourspeed.org.uk/fe/default.asp?n1=32&n2=36

If you put in A449 end up with 3 results, all of which are mobile units. Since these are now the subject of debate on unit accuracy and incorrect use, if you think there is room for doubt worth considering trying to get the video for the whole session (not just a static image) plus the calibration documentation although that is resisted by some forces

Plenty of entries on the dangers and difficulties of doing so on various sites!

Gutted for ya.

Check with a specialist who knows before you make your next move, and I'd also be real honest with yourself if you know you travelled at that speed. You may not get a ban, you might, but your attitude and approach will likely do you more credit than possibly trying to wiggle out of it - they might decide to make an example of you.

I'd be stunned if you got the calibration documentation anywhere other than in a courtroom, and that may not happen either.

Clarky.

Hi. I'm new to the forum but familiar with the A449 (it's where I got my only speeding ticket in over 40 years motoring). Gwent police use white vans parked in laybyes on a very regular basis. There's at least one of them (the one that got me) with only a small camera sign on the back. The markings on the side as I passed the site were clear though (too late then!). In my case, the only consolation was the laser calibration proved the speedo was accurate.

If you didn't see the van, trying for the video image is probably the only option. Do you remember sharing the road with anyone else driving at or above the limit (which is 70 from end to end). If you were, it's possible that the camera was being moved between targets when you were "flashed" and that your speed was exaggerated.

At 105 mile/h it will be a court appearance anyway because it's beyond the fixed penalty range.

Also look at the Honest John website for ways of 'tackling' this allegation of excess speed. www.honestjohn.co.uk

I think you need to look under the FAQs.

Sorry to hear your bad news.
I think I heard recently that there have to be camera warning signs and some people escaped prosecution in areas with mobile vans where there were not correct signs. I'm guessing that this will not be the case in your area since it's listed on a speed camera database but just a thought.

If you do get banned, some crumbs of comfort: I don't think it will be for too long and I don't think you (also) get points on the license. The worst will just be the financial cost with the fine and subsequent insurance hike but if it's just money it's not too bad!

Yes it should be a straight ban, maybe not that lenghty if the driver can prove hardship. Isn't it something like 14 or 28 days for a first offence, obviously if their are priors and the offender is seen to be not learning from punishment then it will be heavier. Also expect the offenders insurance to rise.

For further information on the potential punishment for speeding offences please look here:- http://www.speed-trap.co.uk/Accused_Home/SpeedVSFines/SpeedVSFines.htm

Some people over 100mph have got away with 6 points and a moderate fine - there is one case of someone at 101mph getting a years ban plus a retest. If you want to find out what to expect look at what the magistrates are handing out in the area you got caught, and then it might vary depending on the magistrate, what he had for breakfast, if he had a bad nights sleep etc.

Prepare for the worst and be pleased if you get less than that.

Anything over 100mph is magistrates court and usually ends up with 1-3month ban for first offense.

I once read about an American Motor Company Director who had 2 driving licences, USA and UK.
If/when he got stopped by the Police he would show the licence of the 'other' country. If got him off the hook several times.

Q. Does anyone here have 2 licences ?
Q. If you are disqualified could you drive abroard on the 'other' licence ?
