Welcome Swotty. These are such wonderful cars except when they're trying to empty your bank balance.

Incidentally I see Woody has sold his. I wonder if it's still in the club?

A very useful register, thanks to all. May I plug into the collective W215 wisdom while we're all together, so to speak, with a question?

I am having my side windows replaced, because of the well-known delamination issue, with OEM glass from Mercedes Germany.

The new glass has arrived and it is clear, not tinted, whereas my existing windows are slightly tinted.

The question is: did W215 CLs when new come with clear windows? If anyone knows the answer I'll be very grateful.

Had a look at my side windows today. It's hard to say if they are tinted or whether the very slight reduction in light transmission is simply because of the 2 sheets of glass. They are definitely not tinted as other cars are.

The windscreen is definitely tinted light grey with a sun band across the top and athermic coating.

I agree ....... mine are delaminating slightly but appear to be slightly tinted, if at all. On balance, I'd say they are.

Now ......... if you can tell me why the passenger side door mirror only opens when it wants to .......... or the front nearside indicator bulb doesn't work .... yes it does .... no it doesn't, then I'll be a happier bunny.

Not yet taken the edge off owning such a beautiful car ........ have deactivated the mirror folding function, but the bl**dy bulb thing is getting irritating.

............ the French for bulb is "une ampoule" i.e. feminine ......... perhaps that's the problem.

(Can I say that these days?)

Indicator bulb is the plug that it sits in, if you take the bulb out, one of the connections will be corroded, Mercedes now do a replacement one which you have to hard wire in for around £20.

Door mirror is probably a split cable in the harness next to the door hinge... Take the cover off, look for a split cable and solder it back together!

Thanks ......... do you mean take the door hinge cover off or the mirror housing cover?

Sorry to be thick ........... learning as I go! I gather new harnesses can often be needed.

Stuart

Thanks!:thumb:

I'm also needing 2 front tyres, and the rest of that post is just what I was looking for, too.

Thanks again,

Stuart

I have the same delamination issue, not too sure if there is a tint but if there is it is very light and not really noticeable - did you buy direct from Mercedes Germany? If you don't mind could you let me know the cost to you (pm if you prefer) as this is on my list of things to do.

It's somewhat embarrassing to tell you about the costs, but since so many of you have had the kindness to reply to my question I think I should.

The front windows are £600-plus each and the rears around £500 each plus labour. Mercedes logs the job at about eight and a half hours.

I dealt with a combination of Mercedes UK and my local dealer, Robinsons of Norwich.

Robinsons fitted the glass on Monday and yesterday, and did a faultless job. I had been terrified because my interior is perfect and the work is obviously complex (all door trim off, rear seats out) but in the event you wouldn't know it had been done. I asked to meet the guy who did it and wrung his hand in pathetic gratitude!

The new glass is Pilkington (as was the old) and Robinsons insisted it was made in Germany. As far as I know Pilkington has no plant in Germany.

One (relatively) interesting point that emerged while I was researching this issue: when the cars were built the glass was supplied either by Pilkington or by Sekurit, a German-based but French-owned company. Apparently the Sekurit glass does not suffer from delamination.

South African-built cars were fitted with glass by Armourplate; no information on delamination there.

Was it worth it? In hard commercial terms, of course not. However, to me it transforms the appearance of the car.

I justified the costs to myself by recalling that I had sold my previous car, a Jaguar XK8 - a superb car but a league below the CL - for £22,500 and bought the CL for around £15,000 (a top top price but it was otherwise almost perfect), so in that sense I'm still quids in!

If new glass is fitted by a dealer, there is a two-year warranty on it.

Mine is Pilkington glass also. It is around the top edge but also quite a bit on bottom left of driver glass up to about 3cm - looks really bad and bugs me something serious! just wondering what is the benefit of dealing with MB UK as opposed ls to a dealer?

The trouble is that many owners (and others) look on it as "just a cosmetic problem" - which it is, I suppose, but once you notice it your eye is irresistibly drawn to it every time you look at the car.

Of course it's a huge decision to fix it, in many cases representing a large chunk - if not the majority - of the value of the car. All I can say is that I'm very glad I've done it, even though my wife says I'm ridiculous when I tell her that the car is the most important non-breathing thing in my life!

RK, I only started the process with MB UK because I wanted to find out about the availability of the glass. It just sort of grew from there.

To anyone else contemplating it, I would advise using a main dealer (if you can trust yours) because only they will have all the relevant parts - the right screws and clips, etc - to hand once they start pulling the car to bits, plus the collective experience in-house. It's probably one of the most specialised jobs you can ask of them. Also worth checking that they will do the work themselves rather than farm it out to a glass "specialist", as they tend to do with windscreens.

Aviva covers any glass at £75 excess per window if you are fully comp with them, recently had my rear window replaced with a genuine mercedes part (£1300+VAT JUST FOR THE GLASS I THINK IT WAS!!!)

I didn't think it was right to try the insurance route as when I bought the car the condition was pre-existing. Being then ignorant of double-paned windows I thought the water spotting was simply the result of inefficient cleaning. It was only when I got down to serious washing that I discovered it was permanent marking!

I could I suppose have gone back to the seller but for the first few months of my ownership I wasn't that bothered about it. It wasn't until I started on the process of trying to make the car as perfect as possible that it really began to bug me.

I changed all 4 panels in my CL in the beginning of the year. The cost was staggering but I did work myself so saved a little. Agree with above, the new glass has completely transformed the car.

Did you have to adjust the glass so that the gaps/seals were all correct? Was it easy?

I think my driver's side rear window needs adjusting as there is a 9-10mm gap in the rubber seal where it meets the front window. The passenger side has a 5-6mm gap which I believe is the correct sized gap.
