I've bought my first merc e-class yesterday. However on the way home the cruise control was on but all off a sudden an error message appeared "cruise control and SPEEDTRONIC inoperative" and the car went into limp mode. I pulled up on the hard shoulder and turned the ignition off and on and then the car was back to normal but the ecu light is still on.

Then today I was driving when the car snapped out of cruise control and was just revving, it was saying it was in drive but all the car did was just rev. When I turned the ignition off an on it was ok again. This is very alarming and I must admit it has put a downer on the feeling of buying a new car.

The trade guy I bought it from said that he will pay for a diag on the car and if I am not happy with the outcome I can have my money back.

Can anyone suggest what the problem could be? Or if I should just take it back?

It's a 7G tronic gearbox, are these problematic?
Not necessarily.

The dealer sounds like they're being reasonable and there's really no point in speculating what the fault is when STAR Diagnostics will tell you for certain. My advice is to get the diagnostics done and take it from there, once the facts are known.

He's agreed to give me my money back, I could have had a diagnostic which he was happy to pay for but I don't think I want to go back and forth with that, he is located 100 miles from my house which makes everything tricky.

I just need to find another one now.

I think you have done the right thing - there are plenty good used examples out there, take your time and find the right car for you.

They are not generally regarded as problematic BUT they do need regular servicing - its when the gearbox services are skipped that issues arise.

As others have pointed out if you're running an MB unless you are able to justify the main dealers costs you need to find and build a relationship with a specialist MB Indie - one with a STAR diagnostic machine and the ability to update to the on-line Mercedes service history.

I have posted about the car in the main thread, as I am torn whether to keep the car and get it fixed or take it back and get my money back.

I'd find an Indie with STAR machine and get codes read. Take a full look at the report and see if there are any other issues. Also get a printout of the service history.

Establish the service regime for your gearbox (MB have changed their mind on this a few times) and establish if the g Box has been serviced.

Check the gov.uk site for the MOT history if not already done.

Armed with this info your in a better position to make the keep/return decision.

At the end of the day as others have pointed out there are loads of these on the market but ALL used cars present some element of risk.

Good luck.

I have had a diagnostic completed on the car and these are the faults that came back.

They said that they have never come across the "selection range sensor A has an electrical fault" problem before and they were unsure what it was.

Can anyone shed some light?

just give them the car back and walk away, if you fancy someone else in the same dealership it would make the process easier.

knowing how sensitive the system is, this could be all be down to one problem, but if i purchased this, i wouldn't have the patience to find out what it is.
