Hi guys,

I have recently purchased an E320 CDi, 2001 with 82k on it. After the 200 mile round trip picking up the car I noticed it felt a little rough on tickover and it sits about 600 rpm at idle. Is this normal idle speed for this engine? It seems a little slow to me?

Also on the run back it never went over 80 degrees on the gauge, in fact it didn't quite reach 80... would this affect the mpg much?.

Thank you in advance :thumb:

600rpm is correct for the idle speed, but 80c is too low, fit a new thermostat.

If the engine feels rough, try some injector cleaner and possibly new engine mounts.

Thanks Dieselman, I've just chucked a little Redex in from the Petrol station, I'll put one in every tank for a few fill ups I think!

Engine mounts..... Is there an easy way to check them?

I'll order a stat tomorrow I think, are they expensive?

Quick update, had the car on Star yesterday and saw pretty much the last ten years worth of fault codes!! Stored recent ones however are number 6 injector (culprit of the rough idle) and six dead glow plugs.....

All booked in for Monday morning so will hopefully be running like a dream soon!

I hope that sorts it all out for you!

If you don't mind, I would be interested to hear of your experiences with MB Centre. My quest to find an indie in this area who gives a nice warm fuzzy feeling is, so far, unsatisfied.

Hi Corned, so far the experience is top notch. MB Nottingham the other local indie quoted me............

"
To replace all glowplugs requires removal of the inlet manifold 4.7 hours & 0.6 to replace all six plugs. Approx cost gasket, x6 plugs labour & vat would be circa £525-530 inclusive of vat. And assumes non of the plugs are seized in the cylinder head."

He also quoted me £62.40 for Star.... MB Centre quoted me £30 inclusive.. :thumb:

I understand the 300DT needed the manifold off and so he could be a little confused but as I work in sales I understand the importance of quoting accurately, as will MB Nottingham as they will get none of my business going forward or any recommendations from me

Nick is the guy at MB Centre, very fair so far, he is replacing all 6 glow plugs, number 6 injector, fitting a new thermostat (i've sourced) and coolant and now also doing the pixel repair for me all for £500 including Vat!! :bannana:

That sounds very fair.

MB Nottingham (I know I have a bee in my bonnet about them, but still) are a complete shambles. And it's not just me.

MB independent saw my car a couple of times, but it was a very cold clinical experience. No complaints about the work though, just that they never engaged with me (if that's the right way of putting it) It was purely a business transaction and then end of. I prefer the thought of someone showing some enthusiasm for the job, and the marque. Then they failed the invoice 'washer fluid already brimmed' test I laid on for them.

So then, if you are still totally positive at the end of next week, then I may have to consider a trip down to Colwick when my next service is due...

I shall give them a little write up after Monday when all the work has been done, my Father has the S211 E320 CDI sport and has entered into a service agreement with MB Nottingham, however that is only for the standard service, if it requires any remedial work then it will either go to MB Centre at Colwick (if it's deemed a "merc specialist" job) otherwise I have a friend who runs a small local garage in Cotgrave who does all my other stuff and my Dad's now!!

The garage is called Cotgrave Service Station, very fair and don't ring you saying it needs this and that.

Where abouts in Nottingham are you Corned?

T'other end! :p Not far off J26 M1.

Not a million miles away though :thumb:

Nick and Andrew at MB Centre were very good, took me to the car and showed me my injectors performing at idle through Star.

They also do MOT's :bannana:
