Thanks to Gopro we can witness a 14 car write off earlier this week (click on link below)

Two reasons for posting: its a shocker, but more importantly

a reminder of what to DO when you pull up safely in time before a crash:

Act immediately, clear the space, get safe and warn others.

Here's the video. (NSFW - Not suitable for Wives)

Horrific Pileup Crash Shows Exactly How Dangerous the Nurburgring Can Be

A bad day for insurers and a good day for spare part suppliers.

It says a lot for modern car passive safety that no-one died in impacts at that speed.

To be clear - the full 2 minute video is on the link at the bottom of my post - the brief image at the top is just an extract.

I’ve been twice and can’t recommend it enough. One of the best places ever. Crashes do happen but overall it’s safe. Just avoid the nobs with stop watches and expect there to be someone round every bend, you’ll be fine! Treat it like a public road, which is what it is.

I thought it was virtually impossible to get insured for the ring?

You’re not insured on a normal car policy.

Yes I know, but I meant I thought it was difficult to find a company who would cover the ring? Or am I wrong

We did about 30 laps between us. It’s a great open road and like I said safe if you expect someone to be stopped on bends. The 2 carousels are great to drive on!

did you take out some kind of specialist insurance policy?

The implications of being involved in a multiple pile up like that without insurance don't bear thinking about.

I feel for the guy with the camera who is doing his best to warn others while his car gets destroyed.

No we didn’t. All you do is keep you’re right indicator on when you get a faster car coming up behind and they have to pass on the left. That’s the rules.
I saw a coach and Citroen 2 CV with an old couple going round. Plus Sabine in the M5.
Best 15 euros per lap I’ve ever spent. Plus you get to drive flat out on the Autobahn. I got 166 out my old remapped 535d.

Ah ok cool. Crikey you spent 450 euro that day!

Can't guarantee the accuracy of this source, but the link below is a summary of UK driver insurance cover on Touristenfahrten

(Executive summary: You're not covered for damage to your own car, and probably not for third party damage, either)

But, if you can claim it was someone else's fault...?

As always, be open to your insurance company.....

Unfortunately, most insurers do not cover Nurburgring. I wanted to go earlier in the year but decided not to risk a brand new car. There is an option to pay to do laps within there are fewer numpties on the track but very expensive...

Most UK insurers do not cover the Nurburgring, but I believe German (and Continental European) drivers on the Ring ARE covered as the Ring is considered a German Road on Touristenfahrten Days. See the link in my post above / repeated here:

Insurance and the Nurburgring

If anyone knows different, please pipe up - happy to be corrected.

I went after a major downpour and kept it for the most part under 100Mph, don't be stupid when driving and it's very very rare that you will have trouble.

Was amazing and worth every second :) - it's a bucket list if your a car guy.

(Not very exciting slow video of me around Brünchen (YouTube corner):
