C63 Coupe
Hi,

I purchased my C63 from GC Motors in December and it had just over 4k on the clock, it's a 14 plate first registered end of June 2014 so only 9 months old.

Since buying I noticed quite a lot of noise / drone from the front end but never thought too much about it, the first Merc I've had so just assumed it was normal.

Recently I've started to get vibrations through the steering at around 70mph so I too the car to ATS so they could balance the wheels, I was surprised to find out the inner edge of the Conti tyres have worn down so far they are almost bald, in fact borderline illegal.

ATS said the camber (or tracking) is wrong to have made them wear so quickly, I tend to agree that something is wrong somewhere!!

Car has gone to Merc today for them to check it out but I wondered what people thought about this, surely a car with 5k on the clock shouldn't have worn out the front tyres in such a way, the rears still have around 4-4.5mm on them and they are very evenly worn.

If they tell me nothing is wrong then I'm expected to replace the fronts every 5k miles?

If they tell me something is wrong then they should sort it with new tyres under warranty?

Thanks!!

I know there are a lot of other threads about this, I just wondered if they should have worn in 5k miles on a new car.

I'd have expected to have swapped the rears by about 8-9k, then the fronts 14-15k?

Agreed it needs something looked at but surely this is something that's MB should cover under warranty on a car so new? I'm reluctant to spend money having alignment done and new tyres when I'd rather argue this with MB and get them to resolve it.

I guess it's purely a case that the previous owner knocked the alignment out and it has now worn the inner edges. A re-alignment should sort this out. I would go back to GC motors to ask for replacement tyres (depending on how many miles you have done since buying it).

1,400 miles!

They were clearly well worn before you bought the car. I would be speaking to them and at least get some form of contribution or if not replacements.

I'd be astonished if the geometry was out when it left the factory, so the most likely reason for it to be bad now is that it's had a bump - in which case the MB warranty won't cover it.

Why don't you take it back to GC Motors and get them to sort it out?

Distance really, MB is 15 miles from home, GC Motors is 65 miles and I can't leave the car with them as I can't get home.

If MB give me a price I might have to phone GC and argue that with them, perhaps looking for them to contribute towards it.

Thanks all :)

If the supplying dealer wishes to keep the car to investigate then ask for a courtesy car.

They did have a nice Lamborghini Huracan I'd be happy to borrow while they investigate mine!!

I am going to Wheels in motion on Saturday, they are the dogs danglies!!

Worth a visit!!

It's a 330 mile round trip for me to WIM and Tony and the boys but I wouldn't go anywhere else, do it right and do it once is my motto, these are the only guys that I've found that truly know what they are doing and they are extremely good at what they do

They do tend to wear on their inside edges. It is quite common. Do you keep an eye on the tyres pressures?

Yes, I have a good digital tyre inflator and also the car has pressure monitor installed.

I understand it's common but 5k miles from new is crazy, I'm not replacing the front tyres every 5k miles!!!

Looking online I see ATS do a 4 wheel computer alignment for £65, now I know ATS aren't specialists with MB but surely the computer does the alignment so it'd be the same as anywhere else?

(Don't shoot me for asking!!)

The computer does not carry out the alignment, it is used to carry out the measurements and display the data.

Having someone that knows how to use the equipment, interpret the resullts and apply the corrections is far more important, also, the equipment used varies in accuracy, in how often it is calibrated and other factors.

ATS, will probably spend an hour if that, WIM have been know to spend several hours, hence the price difference.

Having seen what someone unused to MB suspension did to the adjustment bolts on my 190 Cosworth I would choose a specialist like WIM.

It seems remarkably low mileage to have worn out the tyres - your contract is with the supplying dealer rather than MB so they would be your first port of call. Best of luck!

This has got me thinking, the car i have just bought today has only got 5095 miles on the clock and i noticed the fronts are a different brand of tyre to the rears which i thought was unusual for a car with 5k on the clock, continentals on the rear and Yokohama on the front, am i right in thinking these cars came out of the Factory with contis fitted? If so i would expect the rears to need replacing before the fronts unless this cars geometry is out, car is a '62'
