gearbox oil change?

Not far but i have given the tranny change the MK and they where very very helpful offered a free lone car and even to drop me off at the town centre whilst i wait. So there customer service so far is spot on and they did say that they do change ALL fluids including what's in the torque convertor if there is a drain plug ("some don't have them") and replace the filter.

I know Harrow very well i grew up in NW9 so what i may do is drop them an email for some pricing as i haven't booked the service in yet due to time constraints and my old man lives in Northolt so could get this at a more leisurely pace around the family not only that i may not be able to get to MK all the time.

I'll keep everyone updated to how i get on because i'm very much one of those people that when i find something i like i don't change it but am very very critical initially.

I would like to add however that all my mercs i have used Merceded Waterhouse in Chelmsford and they have always been very very good to me especially with my first car a C240 w202 i done all the work myself and they guided me and helped me alot so it's nothing personal it's just £316 is a bit hard to chew on.

Yep Wayne Gates is literally a 10 min walk to the town centre and is one of the best Mb specialists you can go to

I've been quoted £135 plus vat for an ATF and filter change, however; they also mentioned the electric plate causes problems and should be changed. This, with the ATF and filter comes in at £400 plus vat. I'm wondering if this would make a big difference as I can probably change the fluid and filter myself for much less, but if it's worth getting the lot done, I could save up.

Thoughts?

mmmm not sure about the electrical plate thing ..... but be very very very careful if you change the fluid yourself i wouldn't reccomend it if you've never done it.
I know when i done my Golf it's a bit of a process although straight forward.

Remove plug and drain fluid, remove the plastic fluid level plug and drain more fluid, remove atf sump, remove filter, install new filter, replace sump seal, replace sump and fluid level plug, refill with ATF till it start to drip through sump drain, attach computer and run transmission up to operating temperature, check to make sure fluid is dripping from sump to ensure correct level of fluid and refit sump plug.

That's the trimmed down version ! And where you working must be absolutely clean as rule one or things could go very very badly.

I would probably give the garages mention in this thread a ring and check to see what they think personally. I'm more than happy to strip any machine apart but when it comes to transmission my stomach turns.

Well your car has had two gearbox oil changes in it's 97,000 mile life now that should be fine,so the problem with the box may well be the electro plate, now as long as they clean or renew the valves in the plate the whole thing will go back without needing coding to the car,if you exchange the electro plate then star diagnostics is needed, this is now no longer a arm and leg cost,it used to be but now ordinary garages can send the plate away and get them sorted.

Bit of an update the car decided it is not going to make it to the 19th for the transmission service and decided the weekend that it likes to stay in limp mode.:wallbash:

As it is still under warranty i have given the car to the dealer for repair i expect that no matter what they do the transmission will get it's oil and filter changed.

FYI Mobilolife breakdown sucks i had a very very very rude guy on the other end of the phone the weekend insisting that if the car makes it to 30MPH he won't help me ! and i need to take it straight to a Mercedes garage. He wouldn't let me get a word in edgeways and just kept repeating does it go to 30mph.

That would have been no problem if it wasn't 5.30pm (garage closes at 1pm) on a Saturday and i wasn't 25miles from the garage faced with driving 30mph at 5000rpm which would probably have destroyed the tranmission altogether, not only that leave the car there and make my own way home .... thanks mercedes !
