Can anyone recommend a garage not too far away from Kidderminster, that can carry out an automatic gearbox electroplate and ATF change please? Anyone have an idea of likely cost?

Well the electroplate will possibly be repaired, have you thought about finding a repairer near you there are quiet a few companies doing this,if you take the car to a indy they will only send the plate to one of them anyway,my next question is how do you know the plate needs work on it,has a star put up the normal fault codes for the failure of one or more parts in the electroplate.

Thanks for your reply. I hadn't considered finding an electroplate repairer; I just assumed it would be replaced and therefore needed STAR for the new one to work and for the ATF replacement. I did have the OBD check a few weeks ago, and there weren't any fault codes, but I got stuck in third gear again yesterday (previously 3 times in hilly Devon in November 2017).

If I am able to find an electroplate repairer and therefore use the existing part; will they also replace the ATF?

A good independent garage in Stourbridge i will see if i can find it for you . A talk to them might throw light on a repair company.

Well the fact there are no codes may mean it is something else,I would look at the big battery you have in your car put a tester on it and see how much charge it has, most of our mercedes have two batteries the big one runs everything else except starting,my s320 had a habit of sticking in a gear every now and then,I twice had the codes read by star and there were none,I found my battery was at best half charged ,it was finished so bought a new one and after 4 weeks I have no problems in fact the whole car worked better the radio stays on when you just want to sit in the car with the engine off ,the comfort seats work everytime,I know it sounds a little weird but when a speed plate goes wrong you get codes.

I am currently suffering from a winter bug, so not active. However, I have been in touch with Stourbridge Automotive with regard to a gearbox check/repair. They tell me:

"We don’t have MB star machine we use Auto logic diagnostic which is equivalent to MB star machine."

I don't know much about these diagnostic tools, but I keep reading on these forums that STAR is necessary if the electroplate is changed rather than repaired. Can anyone shed some light on this subject?

Firstly I have no technical knowledge so feel free to ignore my reply.

From reading the forums the Mercedes STAR diagnostics is capable of delving deeper into fault codes than a generic one can.

So for instance if a generic came up with a fault with gearbox the STAR machine is capable of indicating which sensor or software is causing the issue.

I’m sure someone with better knowledge will be along to give a better answer in time.

Thanks Robin. That's my interpretation too, however, if the car needs a new electroplate can their diagnostic tool tell my car to accept the new one which will have a different code? Also, my new indy mechanic worked for MB before becoming self-employed and he told me that changing the ATF required STAR as the ATF should be at a certain temperature to drain completely. I don't know if these other diagnostic tools can do what STAR does.

Not quite "Worcestershire" but WDM in Brum can do ATF flush/servicing (just did mine).
Also Home - VMTP Midlands Ltd nr Cannock do ATF refurbs and may be able to help with electroplating. They rebuilt my 6 speed Jag XF box under 3rd party warranty.

What age is your car? Model?

Well if you have a new electroplate then a star is needed to code it to your car,if you get your one repaired then it does not need coding, there is a top repairer at Luton,Beds Automatic Transmissions 01582 560224 but once again when the valve body/electroplate faults it leaves codes, repairing is the cheapest option, this is one of the areas of Mercedes repairs that has come down in price, the people I have mentioned have all the machines needed to check and repair.

Its likely to be classes as a ' Theft Relevant Part' so mercedes are unlikely to actually sell it to somone without a STAR machine anyway if you do need a new one. We have had to do a few for other garages as they werent allowed to buy it.

In reply to BlackC55 - My car is 2008 E220 CDi W211 and in reply to ptruman, thanks for the info, but Norton Canes is over an hour away; I'd prefer something a little closer. I am going to give Stourbridge Automotive a try.

you may be ok on that one then, you will have to give Mercedes a call with your chassis plate and find out
