Car
SLK 280 R171 2006
I have an MB SLK 280 R171, black and first licensed in October 2006. In mint condition with only 60,000 km (a real black panther which I get serviced regularly by MB works garage in Stuttgart whenever I am there on business – they are 600 km away !)
Everything was working perfectly until I left my car outside for 3 winter months without stupidly disconnecting the battery.
Obviously when I tried to open the car this weekend to go for a spin the central locking/unlocking system would not work because the battery was completely flat.
I used the flat key in the key-fob to open the car and bonnet and then jump started it. Went off into the country to charge up the battery and then discovered that I could not centrally open or close the car with the key-fobs.
I have 2 key-fobs and both have new batteries and the little red light flashes on both of them. Neither of them will open or close the doors or boot either by Infra-Red (close to the door) or by Radio Frequency (further away). Needless to say the indicator lights do not flash when I activate the key-fob.
Would much appreciate any help that you specialists might be able to provide and congratulations on a wonderful Forum. Should you require any further details please do not hesitate contacting me.

Solved...I hope this may help someone with the same or similar problem.
Found a friend this morning who was able to plug in my SLK 280. He reset all errors but locking/unlocking still didn't work so we went through all the fuses. This particular problem comes from fuse number 8 in the boot. It is a 5 amp fuse for the antenna amplifier but controls the central locking system (radio frequency) also. Needless to say the fuse was blown...we replaced it several times and it blew each time. We then disconnected the battery, replaced the fuse and then reconnected the battery and hey presto the fuse didn't blow and the central locking from the key-fob was back to normal. If any of you require more detailed information on this I shall be pleased to be more explicit. :bannana:

That 3 month lay off could have killed the alarm siren, this might or might not have something to do with the fuse blowing, is the alarm system working properly when triggered?

Hi Dec, whats the best way to trigger the alarm without breaking in ?

Edit; Leave a window open and lock the car with the remote so as to arm the alarm, wait one minute and reach in the open window and open a door and maybe the bonnet, or, sit in the car and lock it with the remote, don’t move for 1 minute then open the door or bonnet.

When triggered, the alarm siren should sound for 30 seconds and the hazards should flash for 3 minutes, just time it to see if it does that.

When the car is locked with the remote there should be a light blinking, on the dash, to show the alarm is armed, did you ever see this blinking light, before you had this problem?
Just re-read your first post, you can’t test the alarm unless it is armed, if the remotes aren’t working then the above test may be a waste of time if the central locking isn’t working and the alarm is not being armed.

Not sure if this option counts as breaking in but you can lock doors with the remote and open a door with the metal key.

Thanks DEC and Diesel Benz...car is just in for a polish and teflon coating...will have it back in a few days...however many thanks for your input and will get back asap
Best
