Next year after ive done my Austria trip with the s211 cdi i will be hopefully getting a e55k.

But since looking ive come across this
1992 Jaguar XJ6 3.2 Automatic - FULL SERVICE HISTORY - 101,000 MILES - XJ40 | eBay

I know very little about Jag's apart from parts are expensive and they can be thirsty. The car wouldnt be in place of my s211 it would be in a addition for a while till the e55k comes along.

What are the earlier xj's like to live with? :dk:

Or shouldnt i bother :thumb:

The XJ40 celebrates its 30th anniversary next year and yet they remain firmly in the bargain basement / banger category and have no classic appeal.

And there is a reason for that.

It remains Jaguar's least-inspired design to date and the interior is a world of nasty 80's plastic and faux "wood".

However, the parts aren't that expensive and the price of that one seems reasonable.

I like the 80's had many w126's just never a jag. But I take Ur thoughts on board :)

I had one for a while, a 3.2 Sovereign with the brick headlights. Very comfortable and great for the motorway. Engine makes a nice noise too. I got mine for £360 off ebay and it was a great car, had 120k on the clock, great oil pressure and drove like new. Had it for a year and all it needed was a rotor arm.

I looked at these in around 2003 as an interim banger. I fancied the light metallic blue with the (same) quad headlights for some reason.

I don't think they are a pretty Jag - far from it but there was something about them I liked.

Wasn't brave enough to go for one though as I was looking at £900 examples then which weren't mint!

That one looks in great shape and is a fairly late plate example - lovely colour.

I seem to remember the dash controls being an odd position and really cheapy plastic to boot.

Yeah pretty much how im thinking John,

Look out for rust at the front of the front wings. Other than that, and a central locking glitch, I had no problems with mine at all. I think it was nicer inside than my C class, though obviously more dated. Very comfortable too.

Go for the 4.0l if you can, avoid the 2.9 as it's hard work to drive, they all drink the same no matter which engine you get. They do rust, later ones from the ford era have more reliable electrics than the earlier ones.

These cars cover up worn suspension very well, even cars with knackered bushes and worn ball joints will drive smoothly. If you find a manual one they are surprisingly quick for their size.

I've had 2 4.0 sovereigns, and an xj6 "gold" 4.0 manual. loved them all.:thumb:

Don't bother! XJ40s are the least desirable Jags, and this one's way over priced.

X300s are much more desirable.

You are a tall lad, Gavin; have you been in one of these? I find them to be reverse Tardises being big on the outside and small on the inside and even with the front seat all the way back and down, it was not roomy like an E-Class or even a C-Class!

No it's not. It's a tidy looking car with FSH and assuming it has a long MOT (admittedly something that the seller has omitted to mention) then it should come in at about £1200 after a bit of negotiation which isn't bad at all for an old luxo-barge.

No they're not. They are little more than a facelifted XJ40 and share most of the earlier car's bland styling characteristics. They are also firmly in the banger category but since they haven't been there as long as the XJ40 they will remain in the bargain bucket for a lot longer.

Seriously scabby alloys, corrosion round the wheel arches, and who knows where else, main dealer service only up to 65K miles, the who knows where.

X300 with the AJ16 engine would be a better bet, IMHO!

I'm not tall - quite wide though! but have real difficulty getting in my mates X300 the roof is really low and the door aperture is very small top to bottom - bang my head getting in and scrape it getting out!

I love them to drive. Lovely ride.
Look for rot around the rear window, floor pans and sill rails. The sill rail rot is hard to spot without a mirror..
Expect scabs here and there.

Looking at the photos, I can't be sure that there is rust around any of the wheel arches and although the wheels are tatty it's a 23 year-old luxury car that will cost just over a grand so that's to be expected.

And the description states that servicing after 65k miles has been done by a specialist which is fine since they will all have dropped out of the main dealer network a long time ago.
