Hi

I've always maintained my own cars once they've reached the end of their warranty but this is the first 'prestige' brand I've owned so was a bit reluctant to not keep up the full MB service history to date.

As the car is now 10 years old I suppose most of the depreciation has been taken effect and I'm guessing the car is generally worth what someone will pay for it.

I intend to service it myself mainly to save money and refer to to an independent specialist for stuff I can't do like brakes due to SBC etc.

Is this what most of the owners of older models on here do or is there any sense in maintaining a service history considering the costs?

Steve

I'm in a similar position, got myself a 2008 C220 with MB servicing, but I'll be taking it to an indy for the big jobs and small ones I can do myself. Always done this on my previous cars. There are several good Merc indys down here in the Midlands, and most can update the service record on the MB database anyway, so why pay stupid main dealer labour charges?

I had similar questions when I bought a 5 year old 190e and decided to have it serviced by an independent to keep up the history. After another 5 years with the car now 10 years old I reverted to DIY servicing. I went on to keep the car for a further 16 years I think DIY was the right choice and the lack of a stamped service history made no difference to it's value.

Aye - if I had the tools and more time I'd do more jobs.

I normally do my own maintenance but on this one occasion it will go to main dealer for two reasons.
1, the car came with the most comprehensive history I've ever had. It went to the same dealer for absolutely everything, from major servicing, to MOT, to tyres, to light bulbs etc.
Whilst it was great for me buying it the previous owner spent an absolute fortune.
2, the next service is only an A so won't cost the earth. By the time a B is due there's a strong chance we will have sold it, (for a bigger better one) so it will have 100% main dealer history.

I plan to keep mine for a good 8 or 10 years but then hopefully trade it in back to the place I got it from so I'll do indy for the yearly service and MOT, but things like brake discs and pads I'll do myself.

I do all my own work and servicing and have for 30 years.
Some guys at my local multi million pound dealers worry me!
You need the tools and Star with epc to stand any chance or take it to the dealers or good indy.

For me, first 3 years while in warranty, service only done by MB, i do brake pads etc

For cars 3-6/7 years old done by Indie, to keep up electronic service book

After that I do it myself and keep invoices and write up the book if there is one.

If you have the tools then DIY.

For me, I do as much as I can and go to a garage for the big jobs.
