CLS 55AMG
Hi guys I recently had my brakes changed where I bought the car from. some time after my brakes started to make a horrible screeching noise when braking. So I had a look at the brakes and notice that the grooves on the disc are facing the opposite direction from each other. I was alway under the impression and understood that they should face one way dependent on the direction of the vine in the disc. so i took pictures and sent them to the guy i bought the car from. He wrings his supplier and gets into a argument as the suppler side they are correct and was told he should get me to ring up mercedes are ask.
SO the plot deepens!!!

I rang up Mercedes and spent some time explaining the discs are directional and they checked their system and confirmed there is only one part number. so this means when ever you buy discs they will be disc which are for one side of the car only and not supposed to be on the right.

I would like those of you who have a CLS 55AMG to please look at the disc and report back if you have the same problem.
So just to clarify what I am saying. if you look at the pictures the groves on the N/S face the back and the grooves on the O/S face the front on my car?

LEFT N/S

Right O/S

Thanks guys, for clearing that up but I must say i don't like my discs like that it seems wrong.

Yes. Once you've seen it, you can't in-see it.

If you wanted after-market discs, you might find those are available sided.

Definitely something I will consider now! I feel disappointed considering other cars have them facing the right way.

I'm ****** guys I bought a 55 AMG expecting to have one of the best cars. you don't expect to have discs like that on a AMG

It's really not an issue, can you explain what the problem is?

It won't have anything to do with the brakes making a noise - the cars had discs fitted like this from new :)

Hi, no I understand its not the issue with the noise. Its because I know from a technical point of view in terms of brake cooling the vines within the disc should face the back of the car. this is what every brake specialist recommend. Now I know its no big deal in the real world but on a car that originally sold for around £70k you would expect the grooves to at least point in the same direction. it just feels like mercedes is just cost cutting.

Please don't get me wrong I understand where your coming from.:thumb:

The patterning of the holes doesn't indicate the vane pattern inside the disc, as this image from Brembo illustrates.

Pretty sure only the curved vane disc would be handed. The MB discs are, I think, of the pillar design?

The OE brakes on the CLS55 are massively over-capable for road use. Drilling is primarily used to help reduce weight. Heat and gas dissipation is improved over solid but not really an issue on the road.

If the car were to be used on the track most would recommend slotted discs over drilled.

Agreed but the vans are also pointing in the opposite direction

My car originally sold for much more than £70k...and the discs are as yours are. But, it really doesn't bother me.

I replaced my OEM discs with Brembo. They are the same as yours.

Also, every armchair expert tells you that you brake disc is fitted the wrong way around...

I understand it's just aesthetics, but it's the kind of attention to detail you expect; after all the brake pads are sided for no particular reason (as evidenced by a recent thread on here).
