Mercedes C180 Esprit
Hi all,

Brand new here, and new to the world of Mercedes!

Jut purchased a 1997 Mercedes C180 Esprit. Sales went well etc and car seemed to run well.

I've taken it in a few drives and have noticed a few things that I'm begging you fabulous experts can help me with:

1. Interior blower stays on when the dial is on 0 and even when the keys are out! Any ideas?

2. The Car accelerates well in 1st/2nd gear, but when going in to 3rd gear she seems sluggish, jumpy and not wanting to pull off too well (can be rather embarrassing on roundabouts!) There is an awful noise from the bottom of the engine which may be a backfire/misfire but sounds almost like a flap opening/closing or 2 bits of metal hitting each other.

Have put redex in the petrol tank and down the carburettor, but nothing!

Sorry for the essay, but I'm totally lost.

Any and all ideas are most welcomed :).

Thank you all so much for reading!

Greg

Welcome

1. Could be a stuck relay.

2. Assuming an auto. Gearbox may need ATF and filter replaced.

3. Check the under tray is not flapping in the wind.

Welcome to the forum pal :thumb:
Your 1st/2nd/3rd gear problem may be your Mass Air Flow Sensor (MAF/MAS)
Where are you based ? Ideally you need to take the car to a Mercedes specialist and have the car plugged into a STAR (Mercedes Diagnosis Machine)

Thank you for the replies!

Aletank - Thankyou for the welcome!

Took the MAF out today and gave it a scrub, but nothing changed, so might well need replacing!

I think it'll prob need STAR diagnosis :(. Am based in Swindon, Wiltshire, but commute to Northampton regularly!

Any ideas about the heater prob?

Brucemillar - Thank you for the welcome!

Stuck relay? I did question this, however, my lack of knowledge about MB means I'm not sure of the layout. Could you provide a diagram or explantion as to which relay is which and where they are? (Anyway or unsticking without replacement?)

No tray flapping, and it's a manual!

Guessing it's gunna be a STAR job!!

Thanks again both.

Sorry guys, just thought I'd add a little more detail:

When in 2nd/3rd gear, and accelerating suddenly quite hard, she seems to withdraw and almost get jumpy. It only lasts seconds and she seems to sort herself out and go again properly. When this happens there is a noise from the bottom of the engine that sounds either like:

2 pieces of metal clashing
A backfire
Metal opening/closing

Soooo confused and getting annoyed with it!

Sorry to be so amateur, but trying to avoid taking it in and being ripped off!

Thank you.

Definitely MAF. Get one from ECP using the discount code. Cleaning it just doesn't cut it in my experience

Hi Nik,

What discount code is this? Have thought replacing it might help!

Grey.skipper - had a service very recently, and will be having a major service in April :)

Would all agree it is the MAF sensor then?

Thanks again all!

Further details..

Car is now idling higher then normal and jumpy in 1st/reverse.

Gonna take MAF off today and see how she goes, so will update after!

:D

Aaaaarrrrrrgggghhhh!!!

New MAF tried... No joy!

ANYONE have any other ideas?

:(

Get it on STAR and see what fault codes are there before throwing money at it.

Bosch MAFs are good

Needs a star check then.

Codes and live data is what's needed.
