Hi.

I brought one of those dip stick tools and reckon its too long. Ive tried to put the dip stick in as far as possbile but it bottoms leaving a good 10inchs of sticking out of the top.

Also there is no fluid registering on the other end. Starting to feel i need to add fluid.

Anyone brought one of these tools ?

Yes, they are a universal tool for more than one vehicle so will stick out the top.

You should register something, either at 25 deg or 80 deg (should have 2 marks)

EDIT: POST 2000 :)

So you've got the correct one with the black plastic measuring part at the bottom and not just a cheapo ebay bit of bent wire?

It's a universal tool for many different boxes and the fact it sticks out at the top on yours in immaterial.

Buy the one from Mercedes and an infa red thermometer from Maplin or somewhere.

The ones off ebay are useless.

This is the oem one...

The diamond bit is important, it sits in the rest inside the tube, the stick doesn't hit the bottom of the pan.
You need to measure it when it is at 80ºc, which takes around 20 minutes of driving.

Don't start filling this 'box up willy nilly, you will have a whole world of pain.

Hi chaps

I brought one from ebay, its not just a piece of wire, its a huge spring like dip stick with a black plastic end similar to the picture above.

I manage to get the dipstick in as far as it can go. even turning it, or manipulating it doesnt make it go further, so Im assuming its `well in`, but there is no oil on the end of the stick.

So, either this dipstick is wrong, or its somehow being prevented from travelling further down, or the gearbox is lacking a serious amount of oil. The engine / car was hot, drove it for an hour, and I see no oil on it what so ever. I put 1.5 half in and its now registering in the cold section.

Im going to a Merc specialist on Wednesday to read the Star codes, and review the car. I might take my oils, dipstick and filter / gasket and get them to change the gearbox oil. out of interest what gearbox oil should I use, and how much do I need ?

Ive just down the brake fluid, but one of the rear bleed nipples seems to be burred so I need a new one as to remove it will destroy it. Seems the rear nipples are 8mm, front are 9mm, online suggests rear is 7mm.

Those eBay ones will not give you a true reading.

Listen to what we are saying, this has been discussed ad infinitum over the last 15 years.

The 722.6 'box needs the official dipstick, it is about £28 from Mercedes.

Everyone buys a cheap one a few days before realising they are crap and buys a proper one.

You need to use the Merc stuff transmission fluid. This is pretty critical.

Also, make sure it is someone who knows how to do it properly and empty the torque convertor.

Hold on, you say you topped up with 1.5 litres?

1.5 litres of what?

^^ That's the right stuff. He's a good seller, ime.

Will be interesting to see what the indie finds, regarding the level. Could be from a long term pilot bush leak.
Did pulling away at normal revs, I'd have though not if 1.5L was missing ?

Truck pulls away at normal revs. Im not really driving it much today in readiness for tomorrow when th indie takes a look. I have asked them to swap the gearbox oil and transfer and diffs. I will test my dipstick against thiers.
