Once more the German prestige brands come in for a hammering.
Vorsprung durch Technik? German cars 'amongst least reliable' - BBC News

Bottom of the table Bentley [ aka VW] in their defense hit back at the survey, saying it was “not an accurate reflection of the Bentley ownership experience, as it covers less than four per cent of the Bentley vehicles of comparable age on the road in the UK”.
It also said it was skewed against luxury brands.
A spokesman said: “It also fails to include any comparable high luxury brands as a benchmark. Due to the very high quality materials and components used throughout our vehicles, the cost of owning and maintaining a Bentley is never going to be directly comparable with the other cars in this survey.”
Unfortunately this seems to ignore the "elephant in the room" which simple boils down to the fact that if you spend 8 times the money buying a vehicle you expect to perform 8 times as well and that includes long term reliability.

Weren't those figures from warranty direct? I'm not sure prestige car owners use warranty direct, and those that do know something expensive is about to go pop...

Source: What Car?/ Warranty Direct Base: Cars between 3 and 8 years old.
Reasonable to expect cars less than 3 years old would be covered by manufacturers warranty so its unlikely any reliability/warranty claims figures are going to be forthcoming from those sources. ;) Only perhaps when released from the manufacturer warranty " veil of silence" can any real appraisal be made of the long term quality of construction of a car be made. :dk:

"The reliability index is calculated according to how often a car needs to be repaired, and how expensive those repairs are."

I would concur with the findings.

Japanese vehicles are more reliable.

There will always be exceptions of course :)

Until and unless the parts prices can be decoupled from the index, actual reliability is an unknown.

It used to be said that Japanese cars were more reliable, German cars more durable. Not much has changed I suspect but for the German tendency to push innovation (read unnecessary complexity) bringing systems to market before they are fully developed. 'Sit back, watch, then react' serves the Japanese well.

How does "cost of repairs" affects "reliability"? The two are very different things. Whoever wrote the article must br a very confused person.

Accountants, huh...

These surveys are essentially Daily Mail news... they have no validity for very many reasons. For starters the sample group is not randomised... Oh well.
