Now? Have you only just discovered clocking?

I suppose it matters more if you're looking at a car that's decimated by miles...

Yes unfortunately this is becoming more and more common, which is why analysing service history and mot history is so important

Also.. small details can give away a car being clocked. For example heavy wear on pedal rubbers etc.

I've heard of clocking before but only from dodgy car garages, this was a sponsored ad on Facebook! I feel like all the cars will be clocked now once every year if there are services like this around. I won't trust used cars again!!

Search their Facebook page they are loads of examples , you will definitely get put off buying used cars.

Surely this is against the law!

Not sure what that picture is trying to prove?

Maybe it's the same car, maybe it isn't.

I can see why so many lease cars could be clocked so the simple advise is to not buy an ex-lease car (or any car) unless you can be certain that the mileage is correct.

It's that that difficult to avoid clocked cars.

Opt for a car with full dealer history then get the service record from your local MB dealer.

MOT will also help but only if the car is older than 3 years.

Of course a persistent offender can repeatedly clock the car between services... but realistically you can get a feel for the car from the available data.

It's easier to spot one that hasn't been clocked than one that has.

If In any doubt move on.

'Lease & company car' clocking is rife due to mileage restrictions that can be placed by the companies on their employees. The cost of hiring a 'mileage adjustment specialist' is moot compared to the benefits of having unlimited use of the vehicle.

Could it not be a legitimate service for people who have installed replacement gauges?

There is a lot more to worry about on a used car than just the mileage, always assume it could be wrong.

If you get that hung up on miles, buy a new one.

Mileage correction has been around and advertised for years. As said there are legal uses but most often than not it is used for illegal purposes.

Is it illegal for an individual?

The mileage on modern MB's isn't stored on the gauge so no.

AFAIK, it's not actually illegal to change the recorded mileage on the odometer of a motor vehicle. It is, however, illegal to knowingly sell the vehicle and claim that the recorded mileage is accurate.

So, if I were to shave a few miles off the odo of my car and sell it to you, so long as I told you the mileage was inaccurate I wouldn't commit an offence.

With the MOT history site, and electronic service histories now recording mileages, the odo would have to be adjusted every year before MOT/service time for it to provide a believable mileage history.

This is only really effective when done on vehicle younger than 3 years as they don't have MOT tests. So watch out :D

Not really. On an older car that has MOT's, supposing you did 20k miles between MOT's and shaved off 15k just before every test ,....who would know?

Fortunately accurate mileage is stored in other places so it can be verified if you know where and how to check. (Indies know).

As mentioned, it is legally used to correct the mileage on a new/used cluster that has replaced a faulty one as well as the obvious illegal winding back.

As always, buy on condition and history.

It's not the end of the world if you do buy a clocked car. Just means you paid more than you should have done.

As said, the signs should be there unless the clocker has gone to the trouble of replacing anything worn etc.

Another 60,000 miles on a car these days won't make a lot of difference.

What are the odds of buying a clocked car which has done hundreds of thousands more miles...

I think I misunderstood the original post. I get now that you're saying it's shocking how brazen they're being about something so illicit and taboo.

The others are right though, my car's at 110k and feels brand new. If it has been clocked, it's doing well for it.

It's not the same as buying an old Ford where 50k miles is likely the difference between showroom condition and scrap yard.

Not that it makes it right, though.

I assume through star?
