Folks,

Having stripped down the Injection system to repair a faulty seal in the pump, how am I best going about bleeding the system?

Do I really need Star?
Can I just crank (short bursts)?

Any assistance appreciated.

When I ran out of diesel in my 639, I had a problem.
I put 10 lt of fuel from a can into it & tried cranking it to bleed it ( I was assured that it was self bleed).
I tried short bursts. I tried long sustained cranking. I tried cranking with throttle & with no throttle.
Nothing, not even a cough.
Eventually my battery gave up.
I called a friend of mine who is in the motor trade, and he drove out with his 4wd pickup. I explained how it wouldn't start after re-filling, and he said he had found that before with Merc's.!
He said "I'll put a tow rope on, & we'll tow it off"
Frankly I was more than sceptical, because there was no logical reason that I could determine for it to help. But he had driven 20 miles on his Sunday morning just to help me, so I was hardly in a position to argue the point.
Roped up, off we went, slipped it into 1st & it fired up instantly.!!

I can't explain it I'm afraid, but Hth.

Cheers guys, I guess it'll be trial and error.

I'll let you know how I get on.

You can use a hand held diesel pump and pull the diesel up to the engine then reconnect and it *should* fire up.. be warned that Merc diesel pumps don't like being cranked for long periods of time without starting, it destroys the LP pump resulting an a greater repair..on the vans anyway..

Oh I have experience of pump repair, just had mine in for a leaking shaft seal. Our local diesel specialist showed me how rubbish the seals are in these new pumps - He ended up changing it for a more durable one.
