R129 roof ... Fault finding

Quick update ... Followed all the tips on here and nothing.
Will not retract.
I do get movement when pushing one way (the hatch pulls down) but no other movement at all.
Have reset the windows as suggested.
Not sure what way to go next?

Thinking roof control module but really at this point you need to get it on a star.

Ok,will get that done.
I have carsoft 7.4 but never used it ... Will check if that goes to that level of diagnosis. If not will book it in.

Thanks chaps

I doubt carsoft will help much. It might be tricky even with a star given the year of your R129 too.

Reading up on it I think you are probably right.

I wonder if it is even worth booking in with Mercedes? They are likely to just start wanting to change random parts if Star cannot help?

It is strange it was working fine and packed up with no warning? Was up and down as smooth as silk until last weekend.

I think an Indie with good roof knowledge is more useful in this case? Anyone any recommendations? (South of Birmingham prefered) and ideally in the Wiltshire, Somerset, Hants/Surrey or Bucks/Berks area.

The roof is complex and me probing around is not going to help ..

A quick update ... I have booked it in Monday with Mercedes. I thought what have I got to lose? At least then I can document their fault finding ability on here for future reference.
Also getting the coolant changed and handbrake adjusted at the same time to make the trip worthwhile.

Cancel it - you can always re-book. Make up an excuse if you need to but you don't need to have a conscience about booking an appointment. You're giving them plenty of notice.

Booked it in with the guys at Dorking a week Tuesday.
I am guessing Mercedes will not be able to fix it Monday anyway but we shall see!

We both posted same time. Had rung them earlier when posted and they seem nice.
£60 plus vat to diagnose.
They want a scary amount for an exchange control unit though. Hoping its not needed but I bet it does!

Be interesting to know if faulty control units still allow the button to move the hatch down like mine does.

Going to run through all the info Sp!ke put up earlier in a bit. Will report back.

Also will keep the Mercedes appointment as I am getting other bits done booked to make it worthwhile.

I might have a couple of those. What part # do you need?

Not sure .. It might be a good idea to have one lined up though.
Will go and have a look and come back asap.

Not sure i know how to get under the rear seat! :)

I think BBQ Reman refurbish control units and there was one chap I spotted a while ago that also did them... Close on £400 though iirc.

Thanks ...I spoke to them this morning (bba reman) and they wanted £425 then i spotted they are also selling the service for £295 or offer on ebay which didnt impress me.
They do have a lifetime gurantee though and prices include postage.

The Dorking guys can hopefully diagnose the issue.

I also wonder if me putting it up manually has left something out of sync.

Had to give up tonight due to darkness. Part number following shortly.

Hi Watchcame,
You mentioned you're in the South - whereabouts? I'm in Croydon, and my '97 SL280 also has a roof issue. I actually work in Dorking, so will try Cayman Auto Services! How did it go with yours?
If you're in the area, there's a very good indie specialist in Caterham - Ian Matthews.
Kind regards,
Alex.
