Rattling Noise between 1700-2000rpm

As above. Noise seems to come from underneath gear lever area.

I have checked under the car and exhaust fittings seem secure.

I noticed that if I change from D to 4 then the noise goes?

Any ideas as to cause would be appreciated.

Car is W210 E300TD.

Thankyou for the reply - is this a big job? I hear the word gearbox and am afraid to start taking it apart for fear of not putting it back together correctly.

Solved! I replaced the gear selector bushing. The old one was 60% missing! Little bit fiddly as I couldn't find my nose pliers. Gearstick movement feels more solid and the noise has gone. Thank you for the advice. ...much appreciated!
For the laymen like me you do not have to remove any undertray and putting the bush in hot water before helped me squeeze it into place.
