i use axa . £336 for my e class . £323 for a 2.0 hyundai coupe.

A mixed picture is now appearing. I've decided to look at insuring my classics first, and then the contemporary cars.
I'd be tempted to set a couple of specialist brokers on it, Charles. The mixture of low-risk classic business combined with the (due to the recent claim) higher risk modern fleet might get you a better deal than trying to chase down the best available deal for each part of the collection.

What is the benefit of multicar? We have two cars both insured individually with full no claims bonus on each, never had to claim but if one of us had to claim no argument with the other policy over NCB

In our case, cheaper.

You still have two sets of NCB etc.

Ps Never, ever accept a renewal quote from an Insurance company without asking for a discount. Four of of five times, they'll have discretion to give you a reduction on the renewal rate. (It's part of their business model, you discount the first year, and aim to increase the cost in later years)

It may be part of their business model, but it can lose them business. My attitude is that if they try to rip me off by quoting an excessive renewal figure, then even if they subsequently offer me a lower price I prefer to take my business elsewhere, as I no longer trust them.

Won't you run out of insurance companies in a short space of time though?

Insurance....gees....winds me up. I've built up no full claims personally, then on a work fleet policy then again on a motor trade policy. None of course are interchangeable. Seems NCB/NCD is up for discussion or negotiable. They seem to go from 0 to 2 or 3 years if you ask or give a letter of no claim from your company. Bit weird as I write myself a letter pretty much!

Anyone insure many cars & with who? Would be interesting to know come renewal time.

I have a motor trade policy as meet criteria for a part time motor trader. Everyone I spoke to including Adrian Flux & other specialists all say.....sure we can insure you. Then never come back to you or give you ridiculous quotes. I pay about 1600 for me & wife on up-to 10 cars up-to 30k indemnity.

Aviva for us also.
L200 & E Class Cab totalled £482 for the year (other insurers want more than that for my L200 alone. The E Class I could get slightly cheaper elsewhere but the L200 price makes up for it many times over.
Added the SLK280 during the year I was prepared for a big increase and was ready to point out that 2 of us can't drive all 3 vehicles at the same time etc. etc.
But they came back with an introductory discount to match full NCD which will be converted to full NCD at renewal. For 7 months cover a grand total of £74.82.
They have also advised that if all 3 vehicles had been on the policy from the last renewal date the policy would have been £607 instead of £482.

It's the name of the game these days that you have to move insurance company almost every year. Sometimes you can stay with them by asking for a discount on the basis of other quotes. One factor I'll take into account is if they'll match or get close, staying put saves any hassle with evidence of no claims discounts.

I know what you mean about trying to rip me off though. When I changed car half way through a policy, the company I was with comprehensively took me to the cleaners. I will not go back there again.

It's refreshing then that I've been able to stay with LV for home building and contents insurance as the premium hasn't change more than a couple of pounds in 3 years.

Just ask for a discount on renewal. Why be embarrassed?

It's like paying asking price when you buy a car. What's wrong with asking for a lower price when it's the end of the month and you know the salesman is under quota pressure.

Just understand how their business and make it work to your advantage. It's like buying six cans of diet coke from a garage for two quid instead of buying one for 99p. If that's the way they work it, why not?

Just had renewal from Geoffrey insurance who we have used before, I refuse to agree to automatic renewal.

However this year this company has wised up and don’t want regular customers to change.

Renewal includes a reminder of last years price and also what price I would have been quoted as a new customer. Cheaper than new customer and slightly cheaper than last year, not due to increase in ncb we are both on maximum ncb.

Maybe insurance companies are wising up?

Mine has just wised up and quoted a reduction of nearly £500. Finally also I've had my helpful customer service adviser back, Jayne, who's absence has been much noted. So despite a big claim last year, I'm renewing. Thanks for all the suggestions, I would have done more but I've been struck down with a fluey thing of late and not been greatly inclined to do anything.

I've just converted a single car to a multi-car policy with Admiral. As of last Sunday I added the E63 (to an '03 E500) for a further £105-ish until October. They apply the full, protected NCB to both cars. I'm in my late sixties, and the owner and keeper of both cars, with no other named drivers, which probably makes a difference.
