Funny how one thought leads to another idea. On another thread the question came up of "did the cars your grew up around influence your own car purchases in life?" and I thought about the car I spent most driving in prior to leaving home.

For me I had the dubious pleasure of learning in my mum's white Renault 12 TL with black interior, circa early 70s.

For those that have never seen one, you're not missing much! It has that rare quality of looking almost symmetrical from the side, such that it takes a sec to work out where the front is ;)

I Learnt in a 1971 Datsun 2000 estate like this:

https://www.google.co.uk/search?q=d...UICCgB&biw=1366&bih=638#imgrc=qnS6EiptkzSoPM:

Can you guess the first car I owned though?

Driving school had an HA Vauxhall Viva, my Dad took me out to practice in his Mk 1 Ford Cortina GT - slightly different performance to the Viva! Unfortunately I do not have photos of either car. Once I'd passed my test, getting to borrow the Cortina on a Saturday to take the GF out took an act of God - I did not get my own first car (an Austin A30) until 2-3 years later - and only then because my Aunt was going to scrap the car, it needed work doing that would cost more than the car was worth, so I was given the car, bought the required parts and learnt mechanic skills quickly!

A Rover Metro (driving school) or a Ford Fiesta 1.1LX (mum). The Fiesta had a rather interesting clutch in that the spring had a kink in it, which would suddenly move..

Had to be quick on the ball if you were holding it at the time.

I started in a 105E Anglia and then changed to a Mk1 Cortina, first lesson I had was at night.

Triumph Toledo, lovely car...

One of these drove down my road recently.

Vauxhal Viva sl90 I bought this for £50 in 1975 & passed my test in it 1976, then went to S/Ireland on holiday with girl friend...oh to be 18 again!

Still think the Kadett was a nice looking car, particularly the coupe. Much nicer than the Chevette equivalent.

Cheers,

Silver A reg MG metro.

Wasn't a bad motor actually. Quite nippy and like a go kart.

I must be one of the youngest on here!, 2005 Ford Focus Zetec TDCI, It is coming up to 9 years since I passed my test :D

A yellow mk1 ford escort aka "the yellow peril" xyl204n 2 door 1100cc and it was slow, very, very slow

Legally, a Corsa C. Illegally, an XR3i
