I'm posting this to help others who Google search whether a towbar can be retrofitted to an ML63 AMG.

On Friday we took delivery of our new ML63 AMG and having a tow bar is essential for us, so before I committed to the car I checked pretty much every option available for retro-fitting: Mercedes-Benz dealer, 5 or so towbar manufacturers, and more than 20 towbar fitters.

To cut a very long story short, when you contact the manufacturer or fitter the standard answer is "No we don't manufacture/supply/fit because the car is not homologated for towing" or "No we don't supply/fit because the towbar manufacturer says it's not compatible".

Westfalia supply the towbars to Mercedes for factory fit and for the parts counter, but they said they had never come across a retrofit, and couldn't provide a reason why their database and technical documentation states that the Westfalia towbar is not able to be retrofitted to the W164 ML63 AMG.

I suspect it's because the ML63 was released after the non-AMG variants fitted with either standard or AMG bumpers, and other AMG models are not homologated to tow, so the Westfalia documentation simply says the kit is compatible with AMG bumpers, but not the full fat ML63 AMG. This statement was never checked or revised after homologation and release, and the other towbar manufacturers simpy followed their lead as the OEM supplier.

Westfalia UK challenged their technical department on my behalf, and they said there's possibly no reason why the standard Westafalia kit can't be fitted, but there may be issues with exhaust routing, etc. They recommended ordering the kit from the Mercedes to minimise the likelihood of experiencing issues, and letting them know how the installation goes so they can update their records.

I found a main dealer who had retrofitted one successfully, but they said a towbar specialist would be quicker and would do a better job because they do so many of them, and in fact they would get an expert fitter to do the install even if I asked them to do it.

So with the expert fitter's contact details in hand I arranged for their most experienced fitter to inspect my car whilst at the dealer on the ramps, and ordered the full fitting kit from Mercedes. Whilst the fitter was inspecting the car, the last kit in the UK was sold, so another came from Germany. It arrived too late for it to be fitted prior to collection of the car, so it was fitted at home today.

The kit supplied by Mercedes is fully labelled Westfalia with MB part number stickers. The fitter confirmed that it appears to be identical to the standard W164 kit supplied to him directly from Westfalia on any regular W164 job.

There's one exception, the MB kit includes the integrated wiring module which even dealer retrofits don't bother with because it's so expensive, but I wanted it all to be spot on. It does things like illuminate only the caravans rear fog lamps when the switch is turned, and not on the car, so there's no glare reflecting back at the driver from the front of the caravan. Clever.

So today, the fitter installed the towbar:

  1. The bar/beam behind the bumper bolted straight on in place of the standard item.
  2. The lower bumper valance was trimmed along the mould lines which differentiate the standard item from towbar compatible version, so ultra neat.
  3. The 13 pin electrics socket was fitted and positioned perfectly on the bracket welded to the beam.
  4. The integrated wiring module was plumbed in between the standard wiring loom and the 13 pin socket.

As there are no instructions provided, we need to ensure that the star coding to let the car know a towbar is fitted will also enable the electric power supply to flow through the wiring module and in to the 13 pin socket, as that's not passing a current yet.

We're currently checking with the main dealer, but this could be new to them too, so I plan to start a new thread to canvass the views of our STAR experts.

I'll update this thread with Westfalia and Mereceded part numbers once confirmed.

Does your ML have a 'gross train weight' (GTW) given on the data plate?

If yes (and it's not the same as the gross weight of the vehicle, MAM or GVW) it's legal to have a towbar on it.

Otherwise it's not.

Yep, certainly is Bill. In fact I sent a photo to Westfalia to confirm that it's legal.

Nobody can argue with that then! Must admit I always thought that all MLs (including the AMGs) were type-approved for towing. It would clearly be in M-B's interest to pay for that as quite a few would want to tow with one, at least occasionally.

I believe in the US it's common place to tow with ML63s, as part of the "active outdoor lifestyle", for towing boats, jet-skis, gliders, etc :)

That said the removable hitch appears to be a different design in the US, with a visible horizontal socket for the towbar, rather the concealed vertical socket we have in UK/Europe.

Towbar retrofit has now been completed successfully, so it is possible!! :thumb:

Here's the Westfalia part number as shown on the metal plate on the bar/beam:

Here's the Mercedes part number as shown on the bar/beam and box:

They're the same: A 164 310 19 04 ;)

It's possible to order all of the bits required separately, ie bar/beam, socket/towbar, electrics, integration kit, etc but IIRC this is about £1700.

Buying it all together as a fitting kit which more than halves that, and then there's some room for negotiation.

Unfortunately the fitting kit is NOT supplied with the two relays required to complete installation (or at least mine didn't have the relays in the kit). The part numbers required for the relays are listed below.

On the right hand side of the boot (luggage compartment) there is a carpeted panel concealing the rear fuse box: rotate the circular slotted fasteners inwards using a coin and remove the panel.

You will then see the rear fuse box:

Relay A 002 542 81 19 (made by Hella) is inserted into position U (top left)

Relay A 002 545 83 19 * (made by Hella) is inserted into position L (mid right)

Note: * This is an updated part number, which replaces A002 545 11 19 (made by Tyco). Either relay should work.

The Parts Counter only checked the price of one but they were less than £10 each.

Finally, the car must be programmed using STAR. Both the Gateway and the rear SAM must be programmed.

If the electrics don't work then make sure that the correct relays are in place, and that the STAR programming has been applied to both the rear SAM and the Gateway.

And finally, here's the proof that it's all working: the lights on the caravan are on, and the foglights are "switched" on, but they're not illuminated on the car (only on the caravan). Clever.

Thank you to everyone who has helped to prove that it really is possible - you know who you are.

I hope this will be of some use to other ML63 AMG owners who are told "it can't be done".

I forgot to say that Westfalia and Scenic Group (fitters) have both been fantastic - truly excellent service from both, and both are highly recommended.

Bobby Dazzler, thanks for posting this :thumb:

As per your opening thread, I found this via a Google search and it's rather timely given that I need to get it done ASAP. Can I assume that it's simply a case of getting Westfalia to send out all the parts directly and miss out MB completely? I'm in New Zealand and I'm pretty sure that I can get one of the many tow bar firms out here to fit it but just wanted to check that it didn't require the necessity of a MB dealer in the process? Also, is there much/any cutting required at the rear? I can't make out from the pictures you've posted how the finished towbar looks or whether much/any cutting has been done to accommodate it?

As it looks as though Westfalia have joined the topic in the post above, perhaps they can advise to any issues in shipping everything out to me and the associated costs for all the required parts?

Thanks in advance

Steve, I'm sorry I missed your post completely. Based upon the part numbers matching and the excellent support from Westaflia then you could indeed cut out the dealer if you go with generic wiring and have a Mercedes specialist who can enable the settings in STAD.

In terms of cuts, if you know what you're looking for and get down low then you can see the cut, but because the bumper is moulded to be cut it's so precise it looks like it's meant to be.

I hope this helps!

As this thread is regarding tow bars I thought I might add that I'm having mine removed at ollie's GTG and if any one wants it they are welcome to have it FOC.

Towbar on your C32?

Yeah it had it on when I bought the car, I thought it was a bit strange, I thought it might have put strain on the tranny, i had a health check and the ATF changed by ollie and all was good.

Highly likely to be illegal to tow with it too, as the C32 wasn't type approved.

Will be fine on other S203s though.

Not sure bud, I have no use for a tow bar so thought it might benefit some one else.
