Road Sign Help Please.

I have noticed several road direction signs recently where next to the place name there is a yellow rectangle with a solid black dot and/or a solid black square. Sometimes there is just the outline of a square or circle. I think I have also seen a diamond (but may be making that bit up)

Does anybody know what this is for?

Yes I know I need to get out more. But you can't un-see what you have seen and it annoys me now + Mrs M asked me in front of the kids what it meant and I had to admit defeat. This makes me a lesser human now in the eyes of Mrs M and the kids.

Obviously if you can provide the correct answer I will immediately tell Mrs M that have now remembered what it means and that I always did know but had just had a memory lapse.

This sounds remarkably like it could be true? Do you know what the significance is of the various shapes?

If you are diverted with diamonds...continue following diamonds. They just signify different routes.
