Had this on my W211. You have to manually push the handle to open as it would stick in the open lid position. So I thought I'd take the handle apart, inspect it, maybe replace what's obviously worn and regrease where necessary.
After taking a closer look, nothing stood out as being broken or dry. The factory grease was still covering the spring and some other moving parts. I know most would reach for a can of WD40 and so did I but I thought I'd take a picture of where you need to spray as it fixed my handle straight away and completely. Press it and lube the opening behind.
Don't flood it obviously with WD40. A few squirts, then work the handle back and forth and it will release itself.
You don't need to take the assembly out, mine has been removed as part of the boot lid respray.
