Tailgate not locking with rest of doors

We have an 03 ML270 (163) found out today that the tailgate is not locking with the rest of the doors Any suggestions as best order of checking things and where to start, could this be why the indicators have never flashed on locking the car since we have had it ?

You might have 2 separate faults, the alarm and a mechanical fault with the tailgate lock.

It’s unlikely the tailgate fault would stop the alarm from arming, however it might cause the hazards to flash two times instead of three times when locking. Hazards should flash three times when locking and once when unlocking.

Your alarm might be defective, test the alarm by leaving a window open, lock the car with the remote…locking the car arms the alarm…wait one minute and then reach in and open the door/s and bonnet through the open window, the alarm siren should sound and the hazards should flash continually.


You will need to remove the panel to investigate the lock problem, you may be able to observe the lock mechanism from inside the boot with the panel removed. Useful links below.
