Anybody else concerned that the UN appears to have a zero moral mandate. Seems out of touch with humanity doesn't it....?

Growth in United Nations membership, 1945-present

I would offer the explanation that as the membership of the UN has grown it has become increasingly factional. Many of these newer countries are " ex colonial" i.e. somewhere in their past their country has been ruled by a third party from afar usually with the motivation of exploitation of their natural resources with the benefit, on the side, of political stability. I would offer that this affords them a natural aversion to intervention in the domestic affairs of troubled countries by third parties - hence their increasing reluctance to intervene in conflicts. That's not the only reason of course and military intevention is a highly costly business, meaning many countries the UN used to turn to to help resolve conflicts Britain, the Commonwealth European countries and the USA are now more likely to count the cost economically and politically [domestic]also. Other countries may be reluctant to commit resources because they need their miltary to suppress internal and external threats/unrest of their own.

It's when you see certain large communistic Countries rush into the Pacific to "help" with Cyclone rebuilding that it becomes clear the price is a vote. Right across the Pacific this is happening as it is in the Caribbean. Africa is seen as an easy vote buying touch too as one colonial power is replaced by another with far less intention of making a real positive difference in people's lives.

This together with your example of moral erosion tells me at least we are in need of a proper moral authority independent of the distortions many SC members inflict on what is supposed to be an organisation to save humanity from itself.

Words fail me... :(

This situation is nothing more than China and Russia using a fourth party to attack the US, the UN of course do very little and Trump is bad guy because he wants to fix a serious problem that everybody else in the West has dodged for years.
For the UN to allow this to happen on their watch is a gross insult to humanity. The UN needs change, badly and urgently.

Seems like the only two options left at this point are either for China to shut down the oil supply to NK as the US demands (not going to happen), or for the US to blink first and remove some of its military hardware from the region as China demands (not going to happen either).

What other options are there? I don't see the US invading anyone after Iraq and Afghanistan... and air raids on a country with ICBMs and H-Bombs is also out of the question, especially with Japan and South Korea (and Guam) held hostage.

Of course the US could nuke the entire NK with multiple simultaneous ICBM pre-emptive strikes... but that's not going to happen either.

Just a reminder that the NK nuclear programme is not new... it survived through 8 years of Clinton, 8 years of Bush, 8 years of Obama.... and will likely survive through 4 or 8 years of Trump.

Well if you hear a bang you know you've been doing F all for too long...:):)

I tell you what if Trump sorts Kim out and doesn't get a Knighthood from the Queen herself I'm changing my Avatar!

Perhaps, but how long will I be entertaining that thought? Couple of seconds, no more :( ;)

Errr... no. I am not a time traveller from the future. It's a mistake often made... but I just happen to look like him :(

Outer space – tardigrades are the first known animal to survive in space and thus postulated as potential earth invaders from MARS in the distant past. In September 2007, dehydrated tardigrades were taken into low Earth orbit on the FOTON-M3 mission carrying the BIOPAN astrobiology payload. For 10 days, groups of tardigrades were exposed to the hard vacuum of outer space, or vacuum and solar UV radiation. After being rehydrated back on Earth, over 68% of the subjects protected from high-energy UV radiation revived within 30 minutes following rehydration, but subsequent mortality was high; many of these produced viable embryos. In contrast, hydrated samples exposed to the combined effect of vacuum and full solar UV radiation had significantly reduced survival, with only three subjects of Milnesium tardigradum surviving. In May 2011, Italian scientists sent tardigrades on board the International Space Station along with extremophiles on STS-134, the final flight of Space Shuttle Endeavour. Their conclusion was that microgravity and cosmic radiation "did not significantly affect survival of tardigrades in flight, confirming that tardigrades represent a useful animal for space research."In November 2011, they were among the organisms to be sent by the U.S.-based Planetary Society on the Russian Fobos-Grunt mission's Living Interplanetary Flight Experiment to Phobos; however, the launch failed. It remains unknown whether tardigrade specimens survived the failed launch.

Makes me wonder how those Pacific Countries feel now that China isn't coming to help them out like they did with the Tropical Cyclone damage.

North Korea 'may test hydrogen bomb in Pacific'

Human greed the root of all evil, somehow I don't see Trump as greedy.
I agree on the Trump greed point. He is a huge egotist though as is Kim Yong Un. Personal inflammatory comments from each of them are not helpful.

If NK launch a live nuke over Japan to airburst somewhere over the Pacific, the stakes get raised again. It's madness!

The whole situation is teetering on the brink of disaster. A small technical failure or accidentally nuking an area of ocean with a populated island or a surface vessel sailing along minding its own business, and what happens next could have truly terrible consequences.

The importance of finding an effective way to calm it all down cannot be over stressed in my view.

Three Nations have absolutely no intention of calming anything down GJW you must surely by now recognise this....?

This is an issue that can only be solved by humanity at large, the whole of humanity must move against this. No longer will I buy Chinese made. Are you going to join me or just sit there saying Oooo this is bad....

How difficult would it really be to wipe all loans made by China and Russia until they tow the line. How hard would that be. We owe you nothing and if that doesn't help them realise they belong on some other planet perhaps every member nation of the UN could symbolically escort Russia and China out of the building and bounce them down the road literally.

Frankly I'd be really interested in what Sonny Barger might suggest...
