Unlock E280 CDI ECU

I know that the E280 CDI and E320 CDI are the same but the formeris de-tuned and there is a portion of the ECU which is locked out that contains the E320 CDI data. Can this be unlocked and how? I believe I've read somewhere that it requires physical intervention, i.e. it's not like a remap.
