W221 2012, previous MB's quite a few
I know W for wagon D for Damiler I had expected to see B for Benz, but I have a WDD welcome any thoughts.

W = world not wagen

The prefix is the world manufacturer code

W - Wrong

W is for Germany

The first three characters uniquely identify the manufacturer of the vehicle using the world manufacturer identifier or WMI code.

The 1st character of the WMI is the region in which the manufacturer is located. In practice, each is assigned to a country of manufacture, although in Europe the country where the continental headquarters is located can assign the WMI to all vehicles produced in that region (Example: Opel/Vauxhall cars whether produced in Germany, Spain, the United Kingdom or Poland carry the W0L WMI because Adam Opel AG is based in Rüsselsheim, Germany).

2nd & 3rd characters are the identifying letters for the manufacturer.
DB = Mercedes Benz (Daimler Benz)
DC, DD, MX = DaimlerChrysler AG/Daimler AG

As stated by ExMercTech and def90cars above, but thought a more detailed explantion may help.
