Hello, I have just bought my first Mercedes, a 1991 W126 500 SEL. (bought it for a bit of fun.)

Unfortunately the car did not come with any service history so I'm going to assume that it needs a full service including timing belt etc. I also want to check the transmission fluid level.

I've managed to find the transmission dipstick location but I am totally foxed by the red cap which doesn't seem to want to come off.

Please advise.

Before pulling it off you have to unclip the hinged thing that's attached to it, which clips onto the tube itself.

Congrats on the new car :)

To check fluid it must be at full operating temperature - the gearbox not the engine. Engine needs to be running and in park, on level ground.

Check the condition of the gearbox oil from the end of the dip stick. If it's black and smells burned give it a change out.

I believe the engine is chain driven so no timing belt.

Good luck with the w126, I've had 6. You've taken a bit of a plunge buying a 1991 car with no history so personally I'd give the car a full 36,000 mile service and buy an owners handbook off ebay.

Wonderful car ... Enjoy it !
