I just bought a 2014 w204, and taking it for a service - it's done 37,000 miles. The garage say I need a transmission service (31k miles or 3 years) and the cost is £360.

I was a bit shocked, transmission service after this few miles so just wanted to check this is correct, or whether the garage are being "over-zealous"

Cheers

It is usually 5 years or 7500 miles for that model with the 7g+ transmission, unless you have a different gearbox. Was that a MB garage? Previous models were every 3 years I believe..
Cost looks like MB rates though. Have you tried looking on line at the MB service site for a quote and seeing what comes up.

It's startec chessington (actually quote is 310 not 360 - can't edit orig post)

I suggest you ask an MB Dealer. Is the £310 just for the gearbox service?

I paid £120 for my 7g in my old 2009 c320cdi and that was at an mb indy. It had to be done every 40000 miles, although I believe the 7g+ needs to be done more regular.

OK so sounds like the transmission should be serviced so just the cost I need to double check, thanks for the input guys.

Mine was definitely due at 5 years or 75000 miles although I had only done 50000 miles, so best to check online I suggest. you just need to enter your registration number.

OK I checked, the service is quoted at £724, which is twice the price service suggested by star-tec ... but no mention of the transmission service

IIRC a C220 of that age an ATF change is specified in the owners handbook at 37.5k miles - not sure if it's also time related. I know when I bought my 2008 C220 (S204) MB Approved Used from MB main delaer I argued with them that my owners manual said 37K ATF change which had not been done (I was second owner, that MB main dealer had supplied the car new and done all the services) but the service manager was adamant that my 5 speed transmission was sealed for life and it was the later 7g transmission that needed the 37k ATF change! My indie specialist says my 5 speed needs ATF change at 100k miles, so I'll have it done next service.

1. The service schedule for the 7G transmission is as follows:

"Service 20 - Once 31,000 miles/3 years Automatic transmission: Carry out oil and filter change (with transmission 722.9 - NAG2)"

"Service 20 - Every 78,000 miles/5 years Automatic transmission: Carry out oil and filter change (with transmission 722.9 - NAG2-FE+)"

So it depends on the model of transmission you have on your car.

2. You can check for yourself what is due:

Mercedes-Benz ESS

3. And also you should consider this:

Service Care Selection tool

This way you pay a flat rate for servicing and the dealer just does what needs to be done.

4. Alternatively, go and see Terry at Wayne Gates- highly recommended:

You are in London so have a word with Terry at Wayne Gates in Harrow. That ATF change should be around £200 at an indy.
Wayne Gates Specializing in Mercedes Benz

Good luck

Thanks - the ESS confirms the transmission service at 31K. Appreciated.

At 4 years old an air filter and fuel filter are recommended as well as a brake fluid change hence the hefty price. Make sure your indy has included this.
If MB haven't quoted an ATM change then you don't need it. Surely yours is the 7gplus introduced from around 2011.
Good luck anyway

Clearly MB servicing is a dark art - I am more used to taking a Ford to Halfords. Lots of good reviews for Star-Tec I will just trust them to do the right thing. (their quote didn't include the diesel filter but was on the recommendations list + £141)

On my 5G my indy is charging me 100 quid to do it, with genuine MB parts and oil that I've provided that cost me 80 quid.

141 for a diesel filter????? Is it buried somewhere that they have to remove parts? I bought a genuine one off ebay for my 646 for 21 quid and fitted it in 15 mins.

Being new to the forum, I’m certainly no expert, but I recently queried the gear box service on mine (W204 with 7g+) with a local Indy. They looked up the car and said it’s definitely 75000 miles or 5 years, whichever comes sooner. This appears to tally with the service schedule in the book pack.

Clearly MB servicing is a dark art l...

What makes MB service different to most other brands is that they separate between the cost of the basic engine oil and filter service, and the cost of other shceduled service items.

With my other cars - Kia, Vauxhall, Renault, Toyota - there was a different cost for 1st year, 2nd year, 3rd year etc service, which included different things.

With MB, the basic service is always costed as either A or B, and then whatever items become necessary are priced separately on top.

have you thought about getting onto an MB Main Dealer service plan, as I assume they would include the transmission service as part of the service intervals if needed right?

Is it a 7 speed box? I priced up a 2 year old car with a 9 speed yesterday and the parts cost is astronomical! The gasket/sump alone is £122!
