E320 cdi
Hi all i have a 2001 E320 cdi
the abs bas and associated lights have just come on and im looking to find out how to read the codes
i have a little hand held scanner and adaptor lead that reads there is a fault code with the engine but wont tell me what it is separate issue

im looking at the options out there im based in middlesborough have called the two local indi garages that both wont 70 quid for a code read and then the same again to clear the codes once iv repaired it well for that kind of money i can buy a diag machine like the carsoft one

this is where my confusion lies as they say that you can read the codes do diag and clear it all down but when you read the small print it also says not compatible with 38 pin models, could anyone point me in the right direction of a system that works or a fair priced indi/ one man band with a mb star failing that think ill just drive her round while i save up for my own star system and start charging a tenner per read till its paid for its self lol

ps have changed the brake light switch and done the stg reset already
i have a feeling the fault it the off side front abs sensor gone down but would like to make sure before i start changing random parts in hope
thanks in advance for any help its greatly appreciated

Hi,

I would try and find somebody with a Launch or Snap-On kit. It will read the 38 pin fine. £70 for a fault code read is a bit steep! Im £50 inc vat.

Same issue as with mine.
Some other things to check, for free:

Resistance of the all the wheel sensors ~ 1500 Ohms?

Rear axle reluctor ring(s) fallen off?

Tyre sizes all the same / any extreme wear, reducing the rolling radius?

Bad body earth? Worst is usually that behind the OSF headlight.

thanks a111r havent checked the resitances ill get that done over the weekend but everything else checks out ok
blackc55 ill have a dig about see who i can find up here but all seems really expensive when your used to doing it your self lol would far rather have my own kit as i intend on having the car for some years yet last one i had was a c250 that lasted till 240k miles before the under side rotted out lol

OK will do thank you, added problem tonight on the way to work it would appear it's now stuck in second gear when driving don't know if that sheds any light on the possible cause thanks again for anybinfo

Just a thought, is your battery in perfect health? A dying battery can cause a lot of problems on E classes.

I definitely would go with AMGeed's theory of a low battery, you seem to have 'ghost' faults. Charge it up and go from there.

I agree it's worth investing in one, pays for itself

I was about to edit my post earlier to include a failing battery.

I decided against doing so, as no mention of poor starting in these cold times!
But yeah, could be that too.

I have an AST Retriever diagnostic scanner which has a Mercedes Benz ROM and a 38 pin break out box. You can see if you can find one on ebay and never bother paying anyone again.

There are newer tools out there that also have 38 pin connectors as part of their accessories. My Autel DS708 has it and I know that Launch has a 38 pin connector with their higher end scanners. I do not know if the software will read the codes however as I have not tested it.

I do not that the AST has read just about everything on my 97 E420 and my 02 E55.

thanks again for the info drive home from work gearbox was shifting normally really smooth, ill check the battery out as its been a pain in the mornings for a while i just put it down to failing glow plugs

hi guys right thanks to the guys at merc-spec it turns out that the rear abs rings altho still on (which is all i checked ) have rusted and expanded and chewed through the sensors so she is going in on monday to be sorted out also found 117 other fault codes stored the poor girl

they charged me 55 quid and squeezed me in straight away a bit better than 77 quid in two weeks time from the other specialist in the area
long term tho having seen how many systems these cars have and ill be keeping her think ill be getting my self a star system in the not to distant future
thanks again for all your help with this one its been massively appreciated
