Haven't had a chance to have a closer look ,bucketing down with rain. Started the v6 this morning and grinding noise was heard. Shut down the engine, lifted bonnet and saw a heap of metal filings around tension pulley /crank shaft area. what will be the worst . lm aware of the pulley tensions common failure. Any other. thanks

The crank shaft pulley can let go and grind it's way through the timing cover if you're not careful.

ALMOST CERTIANLY THE CRANKSHAFT PULLEY ALSO KNOWN AS THE CRANKSHAFT HARMONIC DAMPER . It has a composite construction with an inner hub and outer rim joined by a rubber molding in between-- this fails allowing the outer bit to " wobble"causing the grinding damage V12 describes- ultimately it will let go completely-you may be looking at a new front timing case AND sump if its that!!!

All good no major damage . Tension pulley crapped itself . l fitted a tension pulley off a low km w210 for $50...

Happened on my IL6 320CDI too. Not too expensive to have it replaced
