Go easy, it's a stupid question, I know, but I've never understood wheel sizes.

I have classic (diplomat), big comfy 17 wheels on my W221. They are ridiculously comfortable but they are a bit...dull.

I'm tempted by an 18" standard wheel design from the W222. (And no, I don't want 20" wheels on a LWB limo.)

Will they fit?

Theoretically it doesn't look that difficult, but life is never normally that simple, and it's always good to ask first.

Not that i'm an expert, but if a 20" wheel will fit, then so will an 18", it is only a change in the aspect ratio of the tyre that will affect the overall diameter of wheel and tyre combination.

So on an 18" rim, tyre size would be 255/45, on a 20" rim tyre size would be 255/35, where the aspect ratio is the relationship of tyre width to height. This would suggest that a 255/45 tyre on an 18"rim would be approx 22.5" diameter overall, and a 255/35 on 20" rim would be approx 23.5" diameter (assuming my maths and understanding are correct).

It's not the width of the tyres that is the issue here.

Look in the back of the wheel find the ET and J of the wheel.

The J should match up the same circa 8.5/9 (this is the width of the wheel)

The offset is key here (ET) as it'll be how far in or out the wheel sits. I think from memory the w221 sits at around ET50

You can come out up to 35et which is further out but I would sit it in further.

ET41 instead of ET43

So, I'm seeing ET41 8J on these A222 401 1900 18" Mercedes wheels (from the W222)

As opposed to ET 43 8J on my existing A221 401 0302 17 inch Mercedes wheels (on my W221)

Does that mean that they're close enough?

A perfect fit

Thank you sir !

Thanks for talking me through this !

In my experience as I changed my own from 17" to 18" and the most is 19" but the 18" is still the best plus size. Beware that 20" will affect your ABS , traction and speedo

How do you work that out?

If you have the correct tyres on the 20s there is absolutely no effect on the ABS, traction nor speedo. This is just misinformation and is muddying the waters for those who don't understand wheel/tyre sizes.

Tyre comparison is the answer. You are right to the point. But about 17" wheel of mercedes 20" is not standard.

For reference the 20" on my W222 are 275/35 rear and 245/40 front.

Standard wheel size is 17 to 20 inches

Grinch's post shows that standard wheel sizes are 17 to 20 on the S500. The 17 inchers being used by us fat cats and diplomats, and the 20 inchers being used by Youf football managers.

The total size, including tyre is "normally" the same, as the tyre profile just gets smaller as the wheel gets larger. So no adjustment to clearance or speedo is required - as long as you're using the right tyre for each wheel size.

My original question was more about wanting to make absolutely sure that there were no clearance issues in mounting wheels with different offsets ( W222 wheels on the W221 )
