Not sure if this is the right forum, but I keep coming across descriptions of "dump valves", normally associated with Max Power type modded cars.

I believe it's something to do with a turbo and have assumed it is on the waste gate side.

Would someone please enlighten me as to what it is and therefore why it's such a big deal to have a particular one?

Thanks...

Great, thanks for that. It's been bugging me for some time.

ONLY find them on turbo cars ........

some turbo cars such as the Audi TT cant have them fitted as they operate a waste gas re-circulating system.

When you used to watch the world rally championship, in the days of the escort cossie etc it was the dump valve that made the chiping sound as they were on and off the throttle.

Yep you usually find them on Turbo'd cars and they can be replaced to improve performance. Explanation below:

Indeed. However, the other reason for fitting some of them is specifically to go around making loud "Ptshhhhh, Ptshhhhhh" noises every time you change gear and annoying the hell out of everybody,in particular me. Certain models even have trumpets fitted for the purpose.

But thanks to modern technolgy do not even need a turbo!

Indeed, for a modest consideration young Master Nobrains Chavsworthy can fit out his Nova/Corsa/Saxo with one of these pointless horrors, at which point hanging, drawing and quartering seems just and reasonable.

Love the sound of dumpvalve on your MR2's, Subarus's etc but those elctronic things are just degrading

If any of my friends considered getting one I would be having harsh words!

Can't believe that they've made a dump valve simulator! A friend of mine had a Renault 5 GT Turbo (Raider) back in the day when they were the car to have as a teenager, he'd modded it and that used to sound fantastic but at least he had a Turbo!

Ahhhh.

My experience of turbo's was on my wife's old Saab 900. The bearings and oil seals failed so I had to replace it (was straight forward but took a few goes to get quite right) and there was nothing on there like a dump valve - just the waste gate to set up correctly.

Wy wife's got a 9-5 now; I wonder if she'd like it to start chirping...
