So now you know. No excuses, use a decent product on a regular basis and you should never have to resort to the vile wheel cleaners that etch the finish, just the odd bit of white spirit to remove annoying tar spots.

I have been using the Autoglym stuff up to now and can clean wheels after two weeks using just a damp microfibre cloth.

i've tried the Turtle wax stuff that came out top but far prefer Rimwax , most of the professionals use it as well , my tub is 1 year old and barely touched i reckon it will last me a good few years yet and thats doing 3 cars on a regular basis

Yes i have been using Rim Wax, very very good, as you say will last a long time.

Yes but Autoexpress admitted to using a wheel cleaner (vile or otherwise) before starting the test.

We applied all our waxes and polishes to sections of the front rims on our test car, after first cleaning it with our serial award winner Wonder Wheels.

Ideally need to wax or seal wheels when they are new but if harsh surface cleaners have been used even more reason to put a protective layer on ASAP.

If I really had to, would use this stuff:

What do they put in 'harsh' wheel cleaners?

I took my car to a hand car wash today (for the first time ever) and aside from using a military spec jetwash, they sprayed stuff on the wheels which actually smoked!

Managed to remove most of the baked on brake dust though and it has certainly transformed the appearance of the car.
